Pros

reasonably cheap
Cons
does not respect "keep alive" TCP packets for NAT table entries
Summary
I was using this quite well as a typical interactive user, and didn't notice anything wrong. However, when testing some program(s) that wanted to use "keep alive" functionality of TCP stack, using wireshark I determined that the modem translated the keep alive packets from my Mac into something different, so the other side would not respond properly, whereupon the NAT functionality in the modem dropped its table entry, and my program was disconnected. For on-line interactive users, that just means you refresh your screen. For background programs, you have to manually restart them to reconnect. If you don't know what "keep alive" is, don't worry about it. If you need that functionality, I would not recommend this particular model. Some other DIR modem models handle the "keep alive" correctly. Just FYI.

Pros

Inexpensive
Works fine
Cons
Wireless range is okay not great
Summary
I purchased this for $28.05 (price match). This works well and has a decent range for my small apartment. If you live in a house you definitely want to spend a bit more on a router, but for small dwellings this does the job.

Pros

-small unit with nice simple design
-green functionality
-low heat
-solid/reliable unit for WAN (wired networking)
-decent configuration options and firmware support
Cons
-no gigabit ports (although for $30 that's hardly expected)
-not really meant for anything other than very light wi-fi use
Summary
I had my doubts about this unit, but most of the reviews I read stated this was a solid performer for a wired network. So far, this unit had given me not problems and has performed flawlessly. I almost purchased the DIR-655 because it had solid reviews and reliability, however the fact that the DIR-655 is known to have overheating issues prompted me to try the DIR-601 since wireless functionality wasn't a consideration. I have owned several D-link products, and all performed great..unlike the Linksys products I have tried. That is only my experience, and I know there are plenty of people whose story with the two manufacturers is the other way around.

Pros

small
easy to use
Cons
Dlink firmware
Summary
Bought this because my old linksys died. I was looking for a temporary router. The firmware of dlink isn't too good I had a lots of random disconnection. But since I installed DD-wrt everything is perfect fully customizable. I would recommend this router to anyone who can switch and manage DDWrt

Pros

Inexpensive, DD-WRT now supported on it
Cons
Short range and throughput
Summary
It's a basic Router that has no issues acting as a router and connecting to the WAN.

The wireless connectivity is on the weak side, so if I have this in the basement, the signal is weak on the 2nd floor, while other wireless routers have had no issues. IT should be fine for apartments.

On the upside dd-wrt is now available for this unit, which allows better setup of the QOS services but reduces the wireless connection speed for me to ~54mb. This is not a problem if just using the internet which is a much slower speed. But could be an issue when connecting to other devices through the dir-601.

Pros

-Works right out of box
Cons
-set up is a little annoying
Summary
Great router, have no problems with 4 machines connected by ethernet and a couple wirelessly. It has QoS which is useful for those annoying slow downs.

Experience: 10 Days

Pros

- Compact
- Relatively easy to open ports for gaming
- Ethernet works fine
Cons
- D-Link technical support is pathetic
- Wireless strength extremely weak
- Installation software kept crashing
Summary
I bought this router because I needed something for a small apartment. I paid $14 for overnight shipping and got the package 3 business days later.

Ethernet capability is fine but the wireless range is absolutely terrible. I have the router on one side of the apartment and my bedroom is 20feet line-of-sight down the hallway and both my Wii and laptop can only get 1 bar of signal strength. The wireless strength is on the maximum setting. My ancient Linksys router is 5x better than that!

In addition, the installation software would not install on my machine. The program kept crashing after many differentiated attempts to install. I have never had this problem before.

This is one of those products where "you get what you pay for". It's a cheap router and thus you get cheap performance. If you plan on using this router for only ethernet connections, then by all means buy it, but if you require wireless in any other room of a house or apartment than get something better.
