I used this in a NAS which is not used continuously so did not really warrant a red drive. The drive performance exceeds the NAS so not used in a performance situation currently but more a near line backup and file store.

This is an excellent purchase for someone looking to increase their storage. It can be had for VERY cheap, especially on sale. The HDD is fairly reliable compared to similar price bracket drives. As well, it's faster than the similarly priced WD Green drives.
This is my second drive of this model. The first one I've had for 6 months or so, and I've experienced no issues. These work well enough in large Home storage/nas environments, and are cheaper than the WD Red or Constellation drives.
Note: If using in a RAID environment, do NOT store important/critical data on these, unless properly backed up.
Double Note: RAID is NOT a backup solution.

Hard to complain about getting 3TB of 7200rpm disks for less than $120 each. I bought two of them and setup as RAID-1 data array to help protect from the inevitable hard drive failure (supplemented by a smaller backup drive and off-site backup). I find them very speedy in this configuration - faster than my previous 7200 rpm drives. I can't comment on using them as a primary disk - I rely on an SDD for those duties.
The drive spinning is not totally silent but far quieter than some other drives I own. I do not hear any head seek noises.
Check your warranty online - most drives (like mine) ship with a 2-year warranty. Coupled with my credit card extended warranty, that is 3-years. Plenty for me.

I ordered the 3TB Seagate and it arrived dead on arrival DOA. VERY frustrtaing for them to be selling this product as this. Yes I did email them with the problem and the typical response was to try it in another system etc etc which was done and emailed back to which I NEVER received a response back.
I had to go through Seagate warranty which took a 1 month downtime since purchasing this NEW HD and the replacement from Seagate was a refurbished hard drive that I DID NOT want as I paid this price for a brand new hard drive that has not been opened or tampered with.
Stay far & clear & purchase carefully from these guys

I was searching a good affordable drive (3TB or More) to have like a backup disk on my computer. The drive was formatted in GPT to use the full 3Tb. Once in a While when I was installing applications on it, it was becoming offline and there has no way to start it again but to powercycle the computer. I tried updating the Firmware, because I remember what was happening back in the days with those Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 . The firmware was updated but the drive still wasn't working. I called seagate to have an RMA since my order was older than 30 days, they ship me a ''repaired'' drive and it still gaves me errors when I was trying to write on it. I removed the drive, put it on a Cradle on an other PC and surprise!, the disk wasn't initialise, which means that I was unable to read the hard drive on another computer. And if I put back the cradle on the main computer, the data was back... very very strange. Seagate told me that the product I originaly shipped was not faulty at all. I was very frustrated I waste about 3 days of work with this product, I just want you guys not to make the same stupid mistake has mine. Last time I tried a seagate product with issue, I told me that it was the last time for life, looks like I should have listen to me! If I was able to give -5 stars it will be my score for this awful product.
I lost about 300$ for thoses defective Hard drives that seagate won't fix (I also buyed a 2Tb). If you're searching for cheap and reliable product I recommand paying 20-30 $ more and get a Western Digital Caviar.

Got a few of these on the $90 before HST and Enviromental Tax Black Friday sales in 2012. Tested them using a full run of BadBlocks, then a complete zero fill 3 times. Passed all tests and the average sequential writes are consistently over 80Mbps, 103Mbps for the inside of the spindles.
Didn't notice any loud clicking or sounds, the firmware seems to be all CC24, and all in all seems to be a solid drive. I can't speak for longevity and the short warranty leaves me a bit leery, but for the price it was a calculated risk.
One thing I did notice was that temperatures got a little high for the drives, and the speeds and temperatures varied. For example I had one drive consistently at 50C and an average write speed of 101Mps peak, while I had another drive at 56C and 109Mbps peak during testing. Same test patterns too. Makes me a little worried about quality control when there's that kind of variance in the same batch of hard drives.

All in all a good hard drive. It has good speed and runs nicely on Sata 3. The only downfall is you must check your mobo to make sure it can read 3TB. After some searching I realized I have to reformat it as GPT drive so it can read higher than 2TB. For the price, it's a good and dependable product and love the extra storage space!

Fast, Big, Cold, and very Quiet. Everything you can ask for in a HDD.
Much quieter and cooler than my 5 year old 1TB drives. In my system I use all low RPM fans, so the old HDDs were the only substantial noise coming from the system. Now I will be going from 3 old and relatively noisy HDDs, down to 2 very quiet ones. Mind you they are not silent, but they are at least below the noise threshold of the 9 800rpm fans I have. We are talking about total system noise ~15-20dB.

Ordered 2 for a RAID1 in my system, one works great, the other is DOA. The dead one has the 'click of death' which is an issue on the controller board. You would think that something like this could be caught at the factory before it even shipped to a warehouse, but I digress; It is a QC problem across all brands for their lower end consumer drives, and so no matter who you go with there is a ~20% chance you will get a dud. At least with Seagate when you get a good one you can rely on it for a while, unlike some other brands. I change my drives out religiously every 5 years, and other than DOAs (this is my 2nd), I have yet to have a drive from Seagate actually fail.

On the drive that is working, I am putting it through its paces right now and I am getting ~220MB/s sequential read on the edge, and ~120MB/s on the inside of the platter. I do video editing on the side, and this should bring a nice performance boost to the system once I get the other drive working properly, and all of the files transferred over. My old drives had a max of 120MB/s, average of 80MB/s, and a terrible inner track speed of 40MB/s. Thank God things have improved over the years!
Pleasantly surprised at the ease of use of this drive. I just popped it in and the Intel RAID controller already knew it was a 3TB (2.7TB formatted) drive. Win8 picked it up right away once I gave it a partition and a drive letter. Nothing like the nightmare that some people have had getting a system to recognize large discs.

After moving dozens of Western Digital HDDs in the past few years, I noticed an intolerable increase in failures. WD's customer service tipped me over. I will never ever buy a WD product anymore. While waiting for SSDs to take over HDD in size, Seagate is the last non-WD standing brand to buy from.

Every retailer puts a purchase quantity limit on these whenever they're on a sale :P The limited warranty + speced power on time of 2400 hours does have me a little concerned though, 4/5 because of that.

That 2400 hours power on has me slightly concerned but in a NAS that's 8 months shy of the warranty and so long as you're not running raid 0 its plenty of time to RMA the failed ones. *knock on wood*

I'm using this HDD to make a full image backup of my desktop SSD (128GB), desktop media drive (1TB) and my laptop SSD (256GB). I don't need speed, just reliability. Lucky for me, I got a good drive cheap and also relatively fast (7200 RMP).

Crystal disk mark gave me about 175/170 mb/s read/writes respectively.
Fraps 30 fps recording at 1080P is fine on my i7 based gaming computer with a Gigabyte P55a-UD4P motherboard (is plugged into 3rd party controller)
Honestly compared to my WD black drives? I can't hear a damn thing coming out of this drive, if silence is your goal, then this is better then the 1 TB black, at only a 25mb/s read/write difference.
My one complaint? I can't buy more at that awesome black friday price.

it is so cheap that i brought 2, also have 1000 points extra. has fw cc24. use it in a external enclosure f 34c applying long test by seatool. average 155.2 mb/s, lowest 90.5 mb/s and highest 191.2
mb/s. this is obviously better than the wb black of 61.8 mb/s & 136.7 mb/s only.
the only question is if it is reliable and durable. hope it last a good 5- 10 yrs.

These are great drives; bought 2 for redundant storage at home (using Windows 8 Storage Spaces), and I couldn't be happier. These are faster than my WD 3Tb Green drive, and seemingly more reliable since the first WD Green drive that was sent was a dud (the second works fine).
If you can grab it for $120 or less, just do it.

Bought a pair of these to upgrade space in my main desktop rig and they are performing very well. The first thing I did was to do the firmware upgrade as this seems to solve some of the known issues with this drive.
Deducting two stars though, one for the short warranty and the other for concerns over the 2400 hours power on rating. This is only 100 days of continuous use so these are probably not a good choice for a NAS etc.
