Pros

It does what it's supposed to. Works in Windows as well as Linux. Even works great with a Raspberry Pi.
Cons
Nothing.
Summary
I have the HVR-1850 pci-e model, but needed a usb unit to connect to a Raspberry Pi with Kodi. It works just as well as the full sized card. It gets pretty warm, but it's normal. I get 9 channels in my list living in Vancouver.. mostly HD, but a few repeats in SD. Hockey Night In Canada in full HD. :)

Pros

Works as expected
Cons
Some steps to install on Ubuntu LTS
Summary
Follow the instructions from the Hauppauge website to patch your Ubuntu 14.04LTS kernel, you should be good to go.
I used the supplied usb cable extension, but nothing else. I can't talk to the other components supplied, other than they feel okay.
I can get 5-6 channels from my place in East Van using an inexpensive antenna mounted on a book case.
Thanks

Pros

USB, no need to open up case, cheap, works well.
Cons
Clumsy software and driver installation, touchy operation.
Summary
AT first I was having lots of issues with this stick. From the installation, lots of reboots, to getting it to work.

First, don't try to plug this into a USB hub. The installation instructions say so anyways. Also, don't use long extension cables, my 10ft USB cable did not work. Either plug it directly into a port, or use the supplied short and shielded cable. The stick is a bit bulky, and will block adjacent ports. Also, once you attach a cable to it, it will weigh down on the port connector, potentially damaging it or working itself loose, so it may be best to use the cable even if you don't need to.

I got this stick to receive OTA HD TV at my computer. At first I was running into lots of issues with stuttering. Tried just about everything. I think the best solution is to make sure you have good signal strength. Using the Hauppauge Signal Monitor, 27 and higher SNR works well. 25 is a bit touchy. Anything below 25 I would get lots of stutters and pixelation (depending on what software I was using to play the picture).

The recording feature on WinTV7 seems to dump the MPEG stream into a .ts file, so that's handy for capture and re-encoding.

To watch OTA HD TV in Windows Media Centre, you have to force enable ATSC (DTV standard). Google "ATSC enable Canada" and hit the first link to download a patch you can run to do this for you (on experts.windows.com). Without it, WMC will only give you the option for analog TV.

BTW, the stick also gets very very hot running it for even a few minutes.

After working through the initial issues, where I was ready to throw the thing away, I am quite pleased with this product.

Pros

Automatically detected and installed In Windows 7. Also, it finds and configures the correct ATSC Digital channels.
Cons
Poor remote quality
Summary
I decided to check my other USB tuner to see if it will pick up the "required" ATSC (D-TV) signals that Canada is going to. Windows 7 Media Center would not allow the digital signals. I had to "patch" Media Center in order to find the digital tuner. Then the tuner never correctly found the ATSC channels.

Pros

- it works
- integrates with windows media center
Cons
- can't get decent channels using antenna in ontario.
- wintv7 is garbage.
Summary
I got this tuner primarily to use my computer to watch tv in my university room instead of getting a separate tv. Installation wasn't a problem. Using a cable connection I was able to get all the channels that other tvs in the house were getting. Using the antenna, I was able to get some useless analog channels and some useless hd channels, although I was able to get CBC in HD (using the tuner in Mississauga).

As mentioned, don't waste your time using wintv7. I use windows media center on my windows 7 desktop and watching shows is a breeze. There are some supposedly good softwares you can get for this tuner (sage tv, beyond tv), but they're ~$100 so windows media center is your beest free alternative (if there's better, then please let me know).

I am able to record live tv using windows media center and the playback is seamless for me. However, my computer is a fairly high end gaming desktop, so I'm not sure how well it would work with a laptop or worse. Also keep in mind that recording takes a lot of space (30 minute show took 2gig).

Pros

small, portable, easy to use
Cons
none
Summary
I bought this to add PVR capabilities to my HTPC attached to my TV. I'm running my Cogeco cable into this tuner. I'm able to receive analog cable, no high definition. I'm using this tuner with Windows Media Center to record TV not the included software. I like the TV guide in WMC, it makes recording simple and fast to set up.

Pros

For analog cable, recording quality is good
USB connected so it can easily be swapped between computers
Easy to setup and use
Cons
Delay of a few seconds when switching channels
Recording software which comes with the package is not that great
Summary
I used this mostly for recording from analog cable. It provides good quality and is easy to setup and use. There is a slight delay when switching between channels so it makes it unplayable if you wanted to hookup your gaming console to play on your computer. The recording software that comes with this product does not have many features so I would recommend finding another one. I like the ease of being able to remove and use it with a laptop. Great quality for the price.

Pros

Picks up ATSC signal, small, install is a breeze
Cons
Software included is way too basic, image quality isn't wow
Summary
For the price, you can't beat this little tuner. Saves you from buying a TV if you're in a cramped up appartment. Overall decent product, but for image quality I'd invest a little more.

Pros

Digital tuner works with Linux. Has about the same sensitivity as my two year old Sharp digital tv.
Cons
The device gets warmer than other USB devices.
Summary
This is more a summary of how I use the device than
a complete review. Basically the device is doing all I
need.

I bought this tuner so I can record some shows when I
can't watch them live. My home PC runs Linux.

I watch ATSC signals and a single antenna provides the
signal to both the TV and the 950Q tuner. The signal
looses 3dB from the the signal splitter and the resulting
signal is sometimes a bit weak for the TV or the 950Q.

So I bought a 20dB preamp with two outlets. From the
signal level numbers I get from the TV and the 950Q I think
that the actual gain is closer to 9dB that 20sB. Anyway,
the result is a very stable image on both the TV and
the 950Q.

The other point is the software needed to use the 950Q.
I can't comment on Windows software since I only use Linux.
On linux, I needed the following,

1. select  kernel parameters to install the following
modules.

xc5000 ; digital tv
au0828 ; digital tv
au8522 ; digital tv

2. Either reboot or just do 'modprobe' with for the
new modules (ex. 'modprobe xc5000')

3. Use Kaffeine to do a scan and watch tv.
(for me the Kaffeine scan hanged after finding a
station)
or use basic tools as follows,

3b. Do a manual scan
w_scan -fa -A1 -c US -x |tee tmpx
scan -a 1 tmpx >~/.azap/channels.conf
or, scan -a 1 /opt/dvb-apps/share/dvb/atsc/us-ATSC-center-frequencies-8VSB >~/.azap/allchannels.conf

4. Connect
azap -a 1 -r VPT-1

5. view or register

mplayer -ao sdl /dev/dvb/adapter1/dvr0
or cp /dev/dvb/adapter1/dvr0 some_file_name
