 Features    [ Edit | History ] - By David_W @Jul 14, 2008

HD PVR is the world’s first High-Definition video recorder for making real-time H.264 compressed recordings at resolutions up to 1080i.  HD-PVR records component video (YCrCb) from cable TV and satellite set top boxes, with a built-in IR blaster to automatically change TV channels for scheduled recordings. Audio is recorded using AAC or Dolby Digital.

The recording format is AVCHD, which can be used to burn Blu-ray DVD disks. Two hours of HD recordings, recorded at 5 Mbits/sec, can be burnt onto a standard 4.7 GByte DVD-R or DVD-RW disk for playback on a Blu-ray DVD player.

The HD PVRs amazing recording quality allows personal archival of your favorite high definition TV programs from any component video HD set top box.  The HD PVR also has standard definition composite and S-Video inputs so you can record your old home video tapes into an AVCHD format for creating Blu-ray DVD recordings.

Features

  • Built-in hardware H.264 high definition encoder, for high performance, high quality TV recordings
  • Component video input from most high definition cable TV and satellite TV receivers. Optical or stereo audio inputs.
  • Record high definition video at up to 1080i resolution, 720p or VGA/D1
  • Record at datarates from 1Mbs to 13.5Mbs, constant and Variable Bit Rate
  • Blu-ray format AVCHD recordings, so you can burn your TV recordings onto a standard DVD disk (up to 2 hours of video at 5MBits/sec) and playback on Blu-ray DVD players
  • Includes HD software video player, so you can playback recordings to your PC screen
  • Audio / Video component video loop through to allow HD recording and viewing at the same time
  • High Performance Noise Reduction Function
  • NTSC,PAL and SECAM Support
  • IR receiver for remote control
  • IR Blaster to change the TV channels in your set top box

I bought this mainly to back up my programs recorded on my BELL HD PVR, and its been a real success! Very easy to install, you can plug a DVD player (component cable+audio) or VCR (Yes, I transferred my favorite old movies!) or any other source of media that has either COMPONENT out or Video out signal with audio out.

The main issue is that with my VCR, it can take time before I start recording due to the stability issue that other have experienced. However, its been straigh forward with my Bell receiver. No regrets whatsoever, and worth every penny! (Read More)

I've had this PVR for a little over a week now and I love it. I can record Xbox and PS3 video in 720P and the file sizes of the recorded clips are relatively small. The only issue I've had is that the software that is included can be very laggy at times but most of the time it is fine. Great product, I'd definitely recommend it to anyone planning to record TV or games. (Read More)

I purchased this product to be able to export all my TV recordings from my PVR and it did just that. The only problem was the removal of commercials. The software included only capture and did no such video editing. Also using Window media center is a pain to configure and not worth the trouble. The product itself is a 4 stars rating but because software maturity is poor and additional software was needed to do some minor video editing and finishing. The product has to be lowered to 3. FYI! I purchased ImTOO Video Editor. I tried a few but this one seems easiest to use.

The Hauppauge HD-PVR is very good to record PS3 gameplay. I love the true 720p HD it provides. However, the software was very disappointing. You're better off to get a third party software to record. However, Hauppauge has done a great job. Too bad it doesnt have HDMI input/output.. it uses Component at the moment. (Read More)

I bought this for one purpose and that is to record programs from my Rogers HD PVR. For that purpose, it did it perfectly and at a very high quality. If you plan on using this to record HD programming such as HD Sports, this is the best device you can use that is affordable. I recorded a HD NBA game and when I played it back on my pc, it was the best video quality I have ever seen in my life! Mind you, it was being recorded at 1080i. The video converter software from Arcsoft was decent at best. It did give you options to what resolution and what format to convert to but they were all presets for vieiwing on the ps3, ipod, xbox360, etc. So you were pretty limited to customization. As for the other features that come with it, I honestly see no use for it. I do not plan on using the IR blaster or the remote control as there is no point in me using it. If all you're planning on doing is recording HD programming to your pc, this is the right gadget for you! (Read More)

You can't use the built in IR-Blaster or remote with the bundle software (ArcSoft TotalMedia Extreme). You can't even use it with the 3rd party applications, SageTV or DVB Link it make them unstable. The only thing you can do is record TV like with an old VCR without any kind of TV guide or live TV pause. If you want to use it with the 3rd party applications, you have to buy a USB IR-Blaster and a MCE remote or USB-UIRT, even then it will not be 100% stable. But it is the only solution to record HDTV(Not FTA)in Canada. (Read More)

I have 3 of these HD-PVRs hooked up to a dedicated MythTV backend using 3 Bell 6131 HD satellite receivers as the video source. They have been working great for the past 12 months and I can reliably record 3 programs at the same time.
