Pros
Can be flashed easily with alternative firmware
Cons
Wireless radio less than stellar
Summary
This unit is pretty decent spec wise, it has good support for alternate firmware. Haven't had any issues with multiple units thus far.

Pros
Excellent quality and reliable
Cons
After about 2 years, stops working -- see summary
Summary
One of the most reliable routers I've owned in a long time -- until it stops turning on after about 2 years.
The issue is a capacitor breakdown, specifically the 680uF 16V one. See http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/asus/rt-n16#fixing.bad.capacitors. Replacing that capacitor will fix the issue and you will have your excellent router back.

Pros
Fast
Good stock firmware
Guest network available
Cons
Older design now
No AC network
Gets a little hot
Summary
I bought this due to its reputation for being extremely reliable - I was installing it at my parent's house which is a 3 hour drive away. It turns out they didn't need it so I instead installed it at my home to replace a Trendnet router. I like it a lot. I am using the stock firmware and it does everything I need including putting a time restriction for when the internet is available to my kid.

The only downside is that it gets a bit warm in the cabinet it is installed in and that it isn't "futureproof" because it is not 802.11AC compatible.

I recommend if you are looking for an N router though.

Experience: 9 Months
Pros
Lots of features
Cons
USB ports can't power external drives. quality control is hit or miss
Summary
This router died on me after about 6 months of usage. I ended up having to open the whole thing up and replace and solder on a different capacitor to get it to work again. Apparently this has happened to many others as well. Other than that, once I fixed it, its worked just fine. The stock firmware is full of features that I don't have to flash it with a custom rom or anything. Great buy if you can do some very minor soldering work.

Experience: 3 Years
Pros
Tomato/DD-WRT support
Very good specs (500MHZ, 128MB RAM, 32MB Flash)
All Gigabit
Cons
Power supply is cheap
Summary
So I got this router few years ago (about 3 1/2 years) to install DD-WRT or Tomato on it. I tried both firmwares and decided to stick with Tomato. I never ran on the stock Asus firmware, so I can't comment on it. However, I will not comment on how good the open source firmwares are, but you should give them a go.

The specs of this router are very good. With 128MB of RAM, 500MHZ of CPU and a 32MB Flash, you can have a lot of stuff running on this firmware. Having USB ports is nice, you can use this router as a NAS, download station and even media streamer. The WIFI signal is good/great, although not spectacular. I'm sure there are other better routers, but it does the job for me. It also has all Gigabit ports, which leverage my network to a Gig network. Today, it is a more common, but 3-4 years ago, it wasn't the standard yet.

The only negative point I would give to this router is the power supply. If you want to use USB and use a USB powered drive, use a lot of its CPU ressources, you will need to change the power supply. The bundled power supply does not have many amps, and when you crank the router, it will suffer and reboot on its own. A good power supply is a Sony Playstation Portable power supply. It is the same voltage, same plug but more amps.

Overall, it is a must buy. I haven't done my researches to check if there are better alternatives today, but I won't change it anytime soon. It is still as good as it was when I bought it !

Pros
Gigabit port and N Wireless speed
Cons
poor multimedia when use 1 terra HD
Summary
If you expect to use just use router service it works great but if you expect like me to share multimedia files like movie and pictures with a hard drive it very unstable and crash most of the time. Many problem on these are reports on the Asus forum.

Pros
- DD-WRT available for this router
- Realtime connection monitoring
- Good factory firmware interface
- 2x USB for storage or printer
- Main WiFi network + Guest WiFi network (each having seperate SSID and password)
Cons
- Issue tracking internet usage (latest ASUS firmware issue?)
Summary
Overall I like this router. Easy configuration and you can set up two seperate WiFi network on this router : your own where your computers and other personal device can connect to and another you can use for your friends and others guests when they pop in and that second guest network only allow internet access. Your computers and shared data are protected if accessed by the guest network. Each has their own SSID and password. USB ports also allow maximum network storage with USB storage device or printer server.

For gaming purpose, GIGABIT ports are very handy to ensure maximum bandwidth and reliability. And it's a nice looking router with blue led inside. :)

Experience: 2 Years
Pros
Strong signal
Flashable firmware
Good Price
Stable
Cons
None
Summary
The best thing about this router is that I can put the Tomato firmware on it. With Tomato, this router is so stable and can output strong signals.

Experience: 8 Months
Pros
- Capable of having 3rd party firmware (DD-WRT, Tomato)
- USB ports
- lots of RAM
- Can somewhat stand upright without a stand
Cons
- Crappy stock firmware
- Bright LEDs that shine through the vent grates
- Thick and big compared to other routers
- Doesn't come with and upright stand
Summary
I bought this router because it has a lot of ram, is dd-wrt capable (as well as tomato capable, etc.), and has 2 usb 2.0 ports. I installed the Tomato Firmware (the teddy_bear version with USB support) on this router with relative ease. So far, I have attached 1 external hard drive to the router and used it as a network drive; it works really well.
From my brief use of the Asus firmware on routher, I found it lacking a lot of features as well as ugly.

Comment: As I’ve said through the review, the RT-N16 is a feature packed router and despite having a premium price it is a premium router. Whether you simply want a router that provides a simple stable internet connection or if you would rather dive into the “Advanced Settings” setting up the router is easy.
