As I’ve said through the review, the RT-N16 is a feature packed router and despite having a premium price it is a premium router. Whether you simply want a router that provides a simple stable internet connection or if you would rather dive into the “Advanced Settings” setting up the router is easy.

I bought this router because it has a lot of ram, is dd-wrt capable (as well as tomato capable, etc.), and has 2 usb 2.0 ports. I installed the Tomato Firmware (the teddy_bear version with USB support) on this router with relative ease. So far, I have attached 1 external hard drive to the router and used it as a network drive; it works really well.
From my brief use of the Asus firmware on routher, I found it lacking a lot of features as well as ugly.

Upgraded to latest Asus firmware, could not get anything above 65 mpbs connection speed. Flashed with EasyTomato, DD-WRT and maximum link speed stayed at 65 mpbs (reported by the router). USB File transfer limited to about 3 MB/sec. Very poor. Upon closer analysis, I found out under tomato that around 60 Mbps, the CPU usage stays at 100%. Considering it uses a 480 Mhz processor, the speed is unacceptable regardless of which firmware you use (DD-WRT/Tomato/Stock). Just google Asus 16N Tomato USB slow and you will get tons of results on Tomato forum from people having the same issue as described above.

Comes with V1 firmware. Easily upgraded it to latest Tomato where BT Transmission works. Could login using Putty and use the NAS, but could not get USB share to appear on Windows 7 network. Have seen other reports of this issue on Tomato. Then upgraded to latest Asus firmware V3 and it is MUCH SUPERIOR to V1 and does everything I want. A USB stick is limited to ~2.5Mbps write speed although read is plenty fast. Added a 2.5" hard drive powered off USB port and no speed issues to the USB NAS. NTFS formatting on the NAS. BT or Usenet NZB downloads saturate my Internet at 5Mbps writing to the NAS. It has a bandwidth monitor that works well. USB NAS share is very simple and works on Windows network. Copying to my PC is at 55Mbps over wired connection.
strong CPU,Build in VPN Server is very useful for me to cross the Great Firewall(Internet censorship system in the People's Republic of China)in China. It's cheaper than any online store.

It is a very fast and easy to use/setup router and has a great price. I absolutely love Asus and all of their products and would recommend them to a friend or family member. I bought one but it wouldn't turn on the second day but i suspect it is a flaw in just my unit. I am going to exchange it and hopefully the next one will be fine.

This router is powerful and fast. The firmware it ships with (1.0.1.9) is awful, but once you upgrade to the latest (3.0.xxx), this is an impressive, feature-rich device.
