Pros Short Depth, Sturdy design, pretty simple installation. Fits 4x3.5" drives. Front USB ports.
Cons tight fit, can't use power supplies with bottom fans
Summary This is a great case. I bought two and use them for a webserver and a PBX. The webserver has 4 3.5" SATA disks and no ODD. It's a pretty tight fit inside and it looks like 4 drives + ODD would be nearly impossible.
Pros inexpensive compact easy to work in short enough for 2-post rack
Cons terrible venting wrong size for rack!
Summary The first disappointment with this chassis is that the chassis fans mount such that they touch the front cover (the front cover is not optional). Thus, the only air the fans get (or exhaust, depending which way you mount them), is limited by the surface area of the front grill exactly corresponding to the size of the fan.
The result of this is that even the more expensive silent fans have to spin up to the point that they're as loud as any stock fan in response to reduced air flow and the resulting increased temps. This happened within a minute of booting the server in 17C ambient temperature.
This was unacceptable to me, so I used tin snips and a bench grinder to open two holes in the front grill to allow the two chassis fans to breath. If this was the only problem with this case I would have given it 3 or 4 stars.
The next issue, and the one that caused me much more work, was that the mounting holes in the rack ears are too far apart to fit a standard 19" rack. I burned through two dremel bits opening these holes, and then had to physically push my rack posts apart by a mm or two just to get this thing mounted. I bought two of these cases, so the second one is still sitting on the shelf six months after I bought it because I haven't gone to buy more dremel bits yet. This trouble definitely would have warranted spending the extra money on a different product.
That said, if you have the tools, and more time than money, I guess this chassis might be the right thing for you. After my modifications it is now performing well, but I would not intentionally put myself through that again.
Pros Small compact size Easy to assemble Great Price
Summary This is my 2nd RPC-230 and I love this case. It is very easy to install regular non-server class hardware. The only things you need to be careful of is that your components will fit. CPU + heatsink is not too high, PCI cards must be low profile and power supply needs to have vents in the front not the bottom. As soon as I need another server case I'll be buying another one of these.
One of the things you must consider when building a Home Theater PC (HTPC) is where you want to put it. I think most people will try and put it next to their TV, but there are other options. If you happen to own an Xbox 360, PS3, or a media extender of some sort, it is possible to use one of those t
Rackmount Chassis/server cases are becoming the preferred case of choice for a growing number of WHS enthusiasts. A very small number perhaps, but growing. Depending upon the style and overall case size, they are quite easy to stick on a shelf, install it in a rackmount enclosure (Doh!), or even u
