Experience: 13 Months
-nice design
-removable RP-SMA antenna
-firmware (either one)
-terrible traffic shaping
-"high power" is relative...
Not much to say about this device. It was purchased with the intent of improving the wireless coverage and reliability of an older WHR-G54-type model running Tomato firmware. Unfortunately I didn't do enough research before buying, and didn't realize that Buffalo has switched to Atheros processors in their new routers... Meaning no Tomato support.

Mine came with the Buffalo firmware installed, and while it seemed very full-featured, it was also very unstable, needing to be reset once a day or more. As such, I installed DD-WRT thinking it would have to be an improvement...

There are two DD-WRT builds available, a stable one (now 5 months old), and a newer Alpha release. The stable version seems stable, but many of the features that DD-WRT is supposed to include are missing. I don't want to name them as I'm not sure I remember 100% but I believe VPN support and possibly VLANs were broken or removed. Meanwhile, the Alpha version restores some of the missing functionality, but is also 4 months old and does crash once in a while. The combination of DD-WRT and this device pretty much negates any ability to manage your network traffic. Whether you want to prioritize VoIP, throttle file-sharing, or simply limit users on your virtual guest WLAN to prevent abuse, enabling shaping will slow all traffic to a crawl and render the router's web-interface inoperable.

After way too much fiddling and re-flashing, I've left the Alpha version installed, turned off every single feature, and am using the router as a simple WAP. I have the broadcast power set at the default, which provides decent coverage inside a small house - but even though I've replaced the included antenna with a 10dBi patch antenna pointing towards the backyard, the signal does not penetrate into my detached garage (roughly 4 feet from the house). Granted, the walls in this building do a good job at blocking signals, but I would expect that even if communication couldn't be established, the garage computer would at least see the SSID.

The shell of this router looks really nice, it's slim and just generally not as bulky as the older Buffalos, but a lot of the design decisions don't seem to make a lot of sense. The antenna socket is on top of the device, when there's plenty of room to have put it on the back with all the other cables. The indicator lights are pretty, but mostly unnecessary. Who needs a "Security" LED to tell them that there's a password on their WiFi? And why does the (separate) Wifi light need to flash continually when there is no activity (even when the router has crashed)?

Based on their older products, I really feel Buffalo dropped the ball with this one; I hope it's not indicative of their other new equipment. It might work OK for some people, but I can't recommend this model when there are better, proven routers in the same price range.

- Price.
- Small.
- Range doesn't impress me.
Works well as an access point (among a couple others). Used for streaming netflix--does it's job.

DD-WRT is now stock on these.
Cheap, reliable.
Works with Xplornet's Expedience, Canopy, and works very good with Hughes Net (satellite internet) for those in the rural areas.
Took Buffalo too long to realize they can not make firmware before they farmed it out to the DD-WRT team?
Decided to list off what ISP's they work with, because D-Link and Linksys are the most common, but tend to have issues with non DSL/Cable based internet...these are a great replacement and so far have 100% success with any internet type I throw at them (I am an ISP technician so you know). This only applies to the DD-WRT enabled ones though, Buffalo's stock firmware is the worst to date ironically lol.
