Experience: 6 Months
Robust build quality
Material on side for noise dampening
I made a PC for a friend with this case. It's really well built and things inside can be accessed easily.

Experience: 3 Months
great case can fit grapchis cards sizes of 11 inches
no cable manegment and not enough cooling options
great case for the money if your are building a work station or budget gaming pc

Experience: 3 Months
-Great sound damping
-a little bit cramped inside
For the price, this is a very good case. The sound damping is among the best of the many mid-towers I have used over the years. No problems so far, build quality is nice, and the front door locks as well. The only con I can think of is that it can get cramped inside when working with large video cards.

antec quality
fairly quiet
many features from its more expensive sonata bretheren
SSD mount
removeable dust filter
hard drive trays are difficult to remove when drives are mounted on them
no removable motherboard tray
one side panel is riveted in place.
included fan is molex only
This is a decent chassis for the price, but does lack some of the flexibility of the other Sonata chassis'

The fact that the "back" side panel isn't removable severely limits cable management options.

The case also isn't too large, so if you have a big video card, be very sure it will fit first.

The drive trays are a great feature of many of Antec's cases, and they do a great job of reducing (or eliminating altogether) any vibration noise from the hard drives. however, in the sonata proto, the trays can be difficult to remove after you've mounted a hard drive to them.

The included case fan only has a molex connector, and can't be used on a motherboard (probably due to the fact that it's a two-speed fan). that being said, it forced me to use a molex "module" from the modular power supply I had.

The case has accommodation for another 120mm fan mounted on the inside of the hard drive bays, but this will cut into any available room for a video card.

It also comes with four raised holes on the bottom of the chassis meant to mount an SSD, which is very nice, since it's out of the way.

For the price, you can't go wrong.

+fairly good looking
- I didn't think the case was very quiet
- The rubber/silicone feet came off easily
I bought this case a few years ago so my computer wouldn't be so loud in my room. Now that I use a laptop as my room computer this thing was deafeningly loud in comparison.

Good build quality, nice looking. Reasonably quiet.
For most people the Sonata III will ultimately be a better buy, IMO.
I scratch-built my first PC in 2003 starting with a Sonata (Sonata I) case. That was possibly the best of all the Sonata cases I've used... I've not seen the IV. I then built with a Sonata III around 2007-2008. I preferred the Sonata I for its excellent paint job even if it was a bit dated looking. I found the Sonata III noisier (with the same hardware inside).
Enough background.... thanks for bearing with me.

As you likely already know, the Sonata Proto Black is essentially a Sonata III sans psu. It also lacks the eSATA port on the front. The paint job isn't as nice as the Sonata III and is a far cry from that of the original. That said, it is a case with a certain understated elegance. The build quality has not suffered over nearly a decade in time which is uncommon and welcome.

If you are building a basic to moderate system from the ground up go for the Sonata III which has the 500W EarthWatts PSU in it. It is easily worth the extra cost, unless you get the Proto on sale as I did.

If you already have a good quality PSU and don't care about front eSATA go for the Proto.

Choice is good!

- Slide trays for hd were great and help it look less cluttered
- did not receive slide tray for my dvd drive so i had to improvise
Great case. Fits a gtx 460 with no problem. Slide trays were great! Came with a rear fan.

Reviews from the Web

Below are reviews found on other web sites for this product submitted by customers.

Comment: The Sonata Proto is not flashy or loaded with fans but a simple, solidly built case with an elegant design. Fitment of the front door is a concern.
Posted by: BernardP @10/04/10
Comment: Proto offers near silent operation, security and easy to use design along with a sleek front, some tool-less features and a fan.
Posted by: BernardP @10/04/10
Comment: The Sonata Proto is solid, and no worse than its predecessors. If you just need a small no-frills chassis for a workstation or momputer, you could do worse. But we’d be hard-pressed to recommend this case for much else.
Posted by: Lord Babaghan @07/01/10
Comment: The overall construction is solid with no sharp edges and a few nice features sprinkled in such as the SSD mount (we'd like to see this more often) and the silicone grommets for the HDD mounts. All which far outweigh the minor flaws we observed.
Posted by: BernardP @06/14/10
Comment: The Sonata Proto is a stripped-down version from Sonata III 500. A good choice for those who don't want the Earthwatts 500W PSU included with the Sonata 500.
