Pros Low profile, dust filter on the bottom, sufficient fan spots, SSD mounts, EATX and ATX support
Cons Flimsy design, fan grating is frail, case lock is cheap, design issues, no tool-less drive installation, lack of cable management
Summary I would like to admit that for 160 dollars, I thought I was going to get a high quality case, and while it has it's pros and cons, there are some rather major flaws with this case's design. The nice features are that it supports up to Extended ATX motherboards, however good luck trying to fit a whole whack of components in there and still have decent air flow. It has two mounting points above the 5.25" drive bays for SSD's, however you have to screw them in, as well as the 5.25" drives have to be screwed down in the case. 3.5" drives are side mounted, however if you want to have reasonable cooling, you either need low profile fans for the 3 120mm fan slots at the front of the case, or you can only have a single 3.5" drive installed. The front face buttons and the door cover are nice touches and give the case a clean look, but the lock for the case is shoddy and is a nuisance to lock up sometimes. My biggest grip has to be that the two 120mm fan bays that are located right by where your CPU would sit on the motherboard, and it's not the location of them that is the problem, it's the fact that the metal mesh is so flimsy you can bend it in and out, and if it's bent in, your fans will break if they are installed with the blades facing outwards to blow air out of the case. This poor design nearly destroyed two brand new Cougar Turbine fans on me until I corrected it. It would be nice if the top cover grating that is clearly supposed to be to allow CPU coolers that blow upwards, was actually directly over where CPU's mount. It's a fairly large grate, but it's too far back to really be effective if you have a custom cooler like the Noctua NH-C12P or the L9i which have not only fairly large fans compared to the stock AMD and Intel processors, but sit higher up, allowing for the best thermal ventilation. About half of my C12P was covered up by the cover for the case, making air venting less effective. Also, if you are a gamer and choose to go Nvidia, this case will not fix larger then a GTX 760 without pinching your PCI Express power connectors. AMD cards that have the power pins on the end of the PCB would be no problem however! The case is decent, but it isn't without it's flaws. If you are looking for something to act as a media centre in your living room and you just plan on running an SSD main drive and have data on your network or a 2.5" hybrid drive, it would be great.
Pros Aesthetics USB 3.0 Capacity Useful User Manual (unlike most manufacturer manuals)
Cons Price? (well worth it though)
Summary This is the best HTPC case I have found, very nice to build in. It has a black brushed aluminum finish so it fits in perfectly with your home theater gear. The design/layout is well thought out, no wasted space if you intended to completely fill it. It holds a lot of hard drives and has compatibility with things such as long graphics cards and ATX power supplies. I can highly recommend this case.
Summary I have to say, I absolutely love this case. I really don't have anything negative to say about it. It's design is so well thought out it has tons of room for HDD and SSD. Not to mention larger ATX PSU. Cable management was not a challenge. There might be an issue if installing all 8 HDD's and 2 SSD's. For any one building a HTPC I highly recommend this case. I got this case to replace a Zalman HD135 (worse purchase ever!!!).
The introduction of Grandia GD07 and GD08 cases from SilverStone ushers in a new era of home theater computing like never before. For the first time, the power and storage capacity of a server can now be neatly stowed beautifully and quietly in a home theater environment. Completely reengineered to fully utilize all available spaces, the Grandia GD08 can accommodate an incredible amount of drives (up to twelve) and high-end components (graphics cards up to 13.6 inches long) with minimal sacrifices. It is even possible to fit SSI EEB (12” x 13”) extended ATX motherboards in the GD07 despite maintaining an exterior dimension similar to SilverStone’s previous generation full-size HTPC cases.
With a wealth of lessons learned from building the best performing tower cases in the last several years, SilverStone engineers upgraded GD08’s cooling performance tremendously with up to five 120mm fan options. And to make sure owners can easily maintain their cases’ cooling ability over time with the lowest noise possible, custom designed removable filters surround the case for positive pressure to work effectively and quietly.
To complement the tremendous new design, the GD08 is built with the thickest aluminum front panel of any SilverStone case with a styling that pays homage to the most popular HTPC case ever made, the Lascala LC17. For HTPC enthusiasts all over the world, this case is truly a dream come true!
Positive air pressure design for excellent cooling/quietness and dust-prevention
Support expansion cards up to 13.6 inches
Supports Extended ATX motherboard
Quick access filters to prevent dust buildup
Aluminum front panel with premium styling
LED indicator with adjustable brightness
Impressive storage capacity of up to twelve drive bays
