Summary I picked up four of these drives to replace four Seagate drives that were dying after many years of service. I needed to install one at a time to resilver each drive but after a whole day it was complete. Noticed the temperature was lower than the seagates which is nice to see. Running solid for 3 weeks now with no problems at all.
Summary Bought 5 of these for use in a FreeNAS server - 4 for use in RAID-Z2 and one spare.
I've been doing intensive testing using SMART (conveyance, extended and short tests), dd and badblocks commands and they are holding up fine. dd shows them to be pretty fast for 5400 RPM drives - speeds reach 116 MB/s. badblocks writes repeating data to every single sector, then reads it back to determine if each block reads back correctly, then writes a different string of data, reads it back, etc. 4 times total. This takes 36 hours - the drive writes or reads constantly over this time. No problems at all, and the drives never get hotter than 27 C at this time (7 C over ambient). This is in a fan-cooled hotswap rack, but still, these drives run very cool.
Throughout this intensive battering, I have yet to hear a single sound out of any of the 4 drives. No click, no hum, no noise at all. No vibration either.
I can't think of anything wrong with these drives and they run great in a NAS enclosure. No need for intensive fan cooling.
Summary So far so good. This drive has exceeded my expectations so far with very low seek noise and low hum idle noise. However, it remains to be seen how long it will last and how loud it will get as it ages.
Summary This is one of the best drive I've had. I originally used it as a USB drive for my RPi, but then put it in a Synology DS213j. Currently, it is running in the 213j as a Single drive, but I am planning on getting another to have some redundancy.
It has very good performances and is virtually silent. I never heard it within the past months. It is night and day compared to the previous Seagate I had before.
Definitively a good buy.
In the past years, I switched all my drives from Seagate to WD after having several failures on Seagate and a very bad customer service. I did have to RMA with WD once in the past year (not for this drive) and had a very good service. They also shipped me a brand new drive instead of a refurbished one like Seagate always did.
Pros Cool and quiet. Low standby power. Better warranty (3 years) than some other drives.
Cons I've experienced very high failure rates with similar WD green drives. Maybe these will be better, maybe not.
Summary These seem to be the drives to get for SOHO NAS servers. WD claims these have a MTBF of 1,000,000 hours. I'll believe it when I see it. I've had a 57% failure rate on 2TB WD Green drives after 20,000 to 40,000 hours.
Summary Installed two of these in a Synology DS213J. The NAS picked them up instantly and configuration was simple. So far the drives seem to remain cool and are quiet. I'm glad I spent an extra couple of bucks to get the WD Red.
WD Red is designed specifically for small NAS systems that have 1 to 5 drive bays. The drives are designed and extensively tested for compatibility in the unique 24x7 operating environment and for the demanding system requirements of home and small office NAS.
