Features    [ Edit | History ]

The Fractal Design Define R4 is the latest in the Define Series of computer cases offering minimalistic and stunning Scandinavian design fused with maximum sound reduction, configurability and functionality.

The Define R4 side and front door panels are fitted with dense, sound-absorbing material making it a benchmark for noise reduction. Moreover, the Define R4 accommodates up to 8 HDDs, all modern graphics card sizes, and multiple ventilation options - including two standard Silent Series R2 hydraulic bearing fans - to keep internal components at optimal temperatures.

For ultimate functionality, the Define R4 features a front interface with USB 3.0 and an integrated three-speed fan controller behind the front panel door.

Key Features

  • High density noise-reducing material for an optimal silent case - To achieve a high level of noise reduction, material with mass should be incorporated which is what we strive to achieve with the dense bitumen used on the side panels
  • Patent pending ModuVent™ design allowing the user to choose between optimal silence or maximum airflow
  • Top HDD cage (5 trays total) can be rotated 90 degrees or removed for additional airflow or to accommodate long graphic cards up to 430mm in length
  • Three-speed fan controller is strategically integrated in the front panel and supports up to 3 fans
  • Two Silent Series R2 fans included, featuring hydraulic bearings contributing to a longer life expectancy – Silent Series R2 retail fans will now come standard in all cases
  • Wider case body that allows for improved cable routing behind the motherboard – now 26mm wide
  • New tool-less front fan holder makes switching front fans a breeze
  • Two SSDs can be mounted on the back of the motherboard plate

Experience: 8 Months
Pros
Elegant
Simple
Good design
Easy to work with
Cons
None
Summary
Quite simply an amazing case. A delight to work with and, once you're done building your PC, it is just as great. Pretty good sound dampening (will obviously vary depending on what you put inside), lots of room to work and some nice features. Looks are subjective, but the simple yet elegant look of this case is a nice change from those windowed-full-neons gaming pcs.

Been using this case for a home server PC for about 8 months now and I couldn't be happier. Definitely a case to consider if you're in the market for a case.

Pros
- It looks alright.
- Has fan filters
- some attempt at silencing.
Cons
- Cheap construction
- Poor Quality control
Summary
I usually go for Antec cases but for my brothers PC build and due to good reviews I decided to go for this one.

We actually went out of our way to get one of these since they were on sale, but out of stock at the stores, we had to order it online and have it shipped, which delayed our build.

When it arrived, I noticed the fan filter holder was broken. So it doesn't completely close.
Also, BOTH fans were NOT working, I figured out you can hook them up to the mother board and they do still work, and that it was actually the fan controller that was not functioning.

Reading reviews on the egg site or other sites you can see these issues are not that uncommon of an issue. Not sure why it's all good reviews on this particular website.

I talked to NCIX and they said they would co-ordinate with Fractal to get a new whole front of case, they didn't have THIS colour in stock so they said it will take a few weeks but they'd ship it to me, and I'd have to take off the front and replace it myself (or bring in the computer to NCIX) ... anyway, it's been maybe 7 or 8 months now and haven't received any parts.
On top of that, the computer had some stability issues and I thought it was because of the case, because it seemed to happen when something was plugged into the cases usb ports.
It turns out though it was due to a faulty SATA cable (connected to the CDrom oddly enough). But having the case of questionable quality really threw off my troubleshooting.

I should have gone with an Antec case.

Pros
Good cable management
Spacious
Quiet
Customizable
Front audio port is interference free
Cons
Lower HDD cage can be removed and/or rotated, but it's not easily done and not really designed to do this. Would be good if it were easier for space / air flow reasons.
Summary
If you're coming from a cheaper case, then this will make you wonder why you ever cheaped out in the first place. If you're used to higher-end cases then it might not be as revolutionary. For the price, it's a great case. Looks good, performs well, is incredibly quiet and is well made.

Pros
extremely quiet system, great looks, roomy, and you probably wont need to upgrade the case for the many years to come.
Cons
hard to move around, and there are places where you can put more fans, however, it wont be too quiet if you do use them.
Summary
i've had this case for a long while now, and its been great. I bought this specifically for my of spare and old parts. My old GTX460's fans started to break, and made a really annoying clicking sound if the fans are under 2000rpm. so, the original case, it was REALLY loud. You could hear it through headphones if u weren't listening to anything. However, with the case, i couldn't hear that sound even being beside it.

A better example is, i plugged in the power LED's wrong, so no power LED working, and i honestly couldn't tell if the pc was on or off. Since i had it under my table in the back, i actually had it on for a week once and didn't notice, (didn't shut down properly)

to the little things...
everything about putting my system into this case was great. Parts were in a box, individually bagged, which is nice. Hard drives were easy to attach, mobo was easy to put in, cables were easy to manage. You'll have to becareful with the cable management though, or you'll damage the foam on the back side of case. I like being clean, and OCD about these things. I only use the pre-installed fans, and they are quiet. I didn't use the other fan holes, or remove those plugs, cause i wanted a quiet system over cool system. Honestly, unless you're OCing, with a powerful GPU, and run more HDD's than the top bay can hold, you dont need any more fans. Stock fan positions, and fans, are fine till the fan dies, or you use more hard drives. Also, the dust filters are great. I taped up holes that aren't really used, to force all intake to the front fan, and with the removable dust filter, my system was dust free after 1 month running on top of carpet. (PSU flipped for intake inside case, highly suggested if u put pc on carpet). SSD's fit fine if you are wondering about that, but i dont like the SSD mount on back of mobo. You must attach ssd before you put mobo... which isn't always the case for many, as HDD > SSD if its your first budget-ish system. To save you a lot of trouble in the future, get a 120gb SSD (250gb if u can afford) and a WD blue, or seagate 1tb, and use that as your first build.

Honestly, for people wondering about what case to buy, get this one. Get one that keeps your PC quiet ,and does it well. Unless you're already married to an awesome partner who loves looking at your PC, and doesn't mind hearing your GPUs spinning those fans like it's life is depended on it(which it is) get a silent PC like this. You might be gaming with headphones and u dont hear it, but a loud running PC is just annoying. Plus, relaxing with speakers on, watching your favorite shows or movies, is so much better than always wearing headphones just because you dont want to hear your PC whine.

sorry for the long review. but it just shows how much i like it. =D

Experience: 5 Months
Pros
Elegant, Spacious, well ventilated, quiet, decent customization, 3 speed fan controller
Cons
Rubber feet (I put it in a desk), Top IO (Once again, in a desk with a drawer above it), Rubber Gromets aern't the best things on earth (Better than the R2, but not the best), NO HDD LED!!!!!!!!
Summary
ModuVent feature is amazing! Keeps dust out as I don't use the top two slots because it's in a desk, clearing the drawer above it by about 0.5". That's where my first issue comes in, it's slightly bigger than the case it replaces, but much better laid out.

The lack of an HDD LED is a killer loss for me! It's been terrible to know if my drives are actually accessing. I've considered using the power LED as a HDD led, but decided against it.

The front panel over the fans had one clip broken out of the box, but because I bought it open box, I couldn't complain.

Overall: Easy case to build in, everything is simple, elegant, and scandinavian designed?
