The X700 Pro is a very fast part. Being the balanced solution in ATI's midrange PCIe lineup, it takes a back seat when it comes to raw speed compared to the X700 XT and NVIDIA's 6600GT but it still is no slouch when compared to the two cards. The X700 Pro offers pretty compelling performance in all games but NVIDIA really exerts its dominance in DOOM 3 so FPS fans may want to consider that id licenses its engine to many developers so DOOM 3 performance may be indicative of what is ahead in a good number of other games. Although the 9800 Pro and XT are not available on the PCIe bus, expect that with a similar processor, the X700 PRO should offer very close performance to the 9800XT but when applying AA/AF to resolutions above 1024, the X700 Pro takes a hit as its 128-bit memory bandwidth cannot quite take the stress.
It will be a hard sell between the X700 XT and the X700 Pro at the 199$ price point with the former coming with a faster core and faster memory and the Pro coming with 256MB instead of 128MB. There are already games pushing the 256MB memory limit and beyond and this trend will likely continue with the advent of Half-Life 2 and DOOM 3. Gamers will need to make a choice between visual quality or faster overall speed but with reduced texture sizes and the X700 Pro makes a strong case for the former.
The fan on the X700 Pro is dynamic but tends to be on the loud side. For those that are sensitive to noise this should be taken into consideration as it sounds louder than the usual ATI cards.
