While the WD2500KS is not a rockstar hard drive like the 74 GB Raptor, it is a great choice for use as a main drive, for storage, or just about any other application.
Those of us who are always looking for the bigger, better and faster storage solutions have the end in sight. Lately, more and more SATA enhanced 3.0Gb/s drives are hitting the market. Western Digital one company offering solutions to those of us who aren't satisfied with second rate speeds, those o
It's difficult to ascertain how much of this improvement comes from WD's long-overdue migration to a native SATA interface and how much comes from the WD2500KS's larger 16 MB buffer. If we had to hazard a guess, our money would be on the larger buffer, at least for the single-user gains. Another
f you are looking for a new hard drive which does a good job of balancing price and performance, Western Digital's Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250 GB is a smart choice.
What does the Caviar SE16 have to justify its $25-40 higher price tag? Not much, at least as far as performance is concerned. The drive's most stunning performance is probably in IOMeter, where with the exception of the web server tests, it does rather well. Otherwise, though, the Caviar SE16's pe

Pretty nice hard drive to put in RAID for mid user. High end people will like a quiter hard drive than this one.

this drive works great and i cant hear it at all. i kind of wish i got a 500gb drive instead with pricing drops, but this drive is good enough for my purposes. it is just being used as a network storage drive so its not being stressed very much.

I bought this for my system disk in a new build, because the SE16 drives were reviewed as very quiet and fast, and fewer platters are supposedly quieter. It turned out to be by far the noisiest item in my system, even with AAM at max using the Hitachi tools, and slow as well. I also bought a Hitachi Deskstar P7K500 for data, a relatively unknown new drive. I bought another Hitachi last week to replace the WD, and am using the WD SE16 for a paperweight. I have Nexus case fans on low and can't hear the Hitachi drive at all, even when thrashing it on backups and tests. My advice: spend $20 more for the Hitachi, its faster and whisper quiet.

A nice and cheap product to buy if your're looking for a new SATA hard drive with dual power adapters. However, drive access noises can get loud sometimes.

For the price, this is an outstanding hard drive. The performance is excellent and the hard drive does exactly what it's supposed to. The drive is a bit noisier than I expected, but certainly quieter than other drives I've had (Samsung, seagate, maxtor, etc.). Overall a very good and reliable drive.

For my purposes (media storage and games) this drive performs perfect. The seek is quiet, and as I don't mind waiting a bit for things to load (not that it takes long anyways) - it gets the job done. It doesn't get hot, and is not noticeable above system noise - however, many successive random seeks tend to be noticeable.

I bought this was for setup RAID 1 with the existing hard drive in my Dell 531. In the Intel Matrix Storage Manager, it shows Native Command Queuing support is No, while my existing hard drive is Yes. It is not a setting that can be turned on or off.

I snagged this drive on special during one of the sales... Noise level was acceptable, and performance was much better than I expected, most likely thanks to the 16MB cache. I've had bad experiences with WD quality control in the past few years, so hopefully this drive will go a long way toward redeeming them.
