The HighPoint RocketRAID 2320 PCI Express to SATA II RAID Controller is the next generation for high performance computing solutions utilizing the latest interconnect technology PCI-Express.
The RocketRAID 2320 is set to give much faster and improved I/O and supports features that are critical for high performance
computing, high end workstation and enterprise storage server environments.
PCI Express delivers data transfer in both directions simultaneously with its serial data transfer system and brings with it higher clock speeds.
Each expansion slot in PCI Express can have several channels which gives plenty of room for expansion. Thereis also the same data rate in both directions providing the performance and scalability for the next decade.
The HighPoint RocketRAID 2320 Controller offers 8 internal ports that combine high-performance storage connectivity of Serial ATA with HighPoint's advanced RAID features, including, Online Capacity Expansion, Online RAID Level Migration (OCE/ORLM) and HighPoint's RAID Management software.
The RocketRAID 2320 supports advanced RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 10, and JBOD for maximum configuration flexibility. HighPoint offers the broadest range of support for all major operating systems to ensure OS and hardware server compatibility.
Drivers are available for all major operating systems, including Windows, Linux, FreeBSD. Open source is also provided for Linux and FreeBSD.

Today we are going to introduce to you a hardware RAID 5 controller from HighPoint that supports SATA-II and SATA150 hard disk drive, advanced PCI-Express interface, both command queuing technologies, such as TCQ and NCQ. This controller demonstrated pretty good scalability and high performance in o
Tomshardware compares the 2320 from Highpoint to several other PCI-X Raid adapters, including the 2320's twin PCI-X brother, the Hihgpoint 2220. A slight performance edge is handed to the PCI-e with respect to its PCI-X cousin.

I wanted to setup a 2TB RAID5 array, but it would fail every time. After dealing extensively with Highpoint email support (no toll free phone support), they eventually gave me their DOS testing utility. It turned out my card's EEPROM was failing. After returning the card and getting an Areca ARC-1220, I found out that the RocketRaid had corrupted my Western Digital SE16 500GB (WD5000AAKS) when I enabled staggered spin up. Why the EEPROM failed, I don't know, but it definitely wasted a couple weeks of my time.

I bought this card so that I could connect up 8 250 GB hard drives in a RAID50 configuration. It works well for doing this. Linux drivers are fairly flaky (hard to install with Ubuntu), but I got Windows Vista installed on it nicely. Vista gives the hard drive a performance score of 5.9, so it's decent. Average read speed using HDTach is about 90 MB/sec.

I bought this for my home computer intending to build an 8x 250GB raid 5 array using my Asus A8n-SLI premium's PCI-E4 slot. It works and performance seems pretty good, however, this is most certainly not a true hardware solution. On full speed transfers (either read or write), the cpu usage can go as high as 50% (average 30% throughout) on an Athlon 64 3000+. Idling cpu usage is a constant 5%. I recommend dual core cpu for a RAID 5 config. You can consider this midway between full hardware raid 5 and software raid 5 in that it is fully bios manageable (so no OS dependency on the RAID management), but still using CPU cycles to do the hard work. In this sense, it is comparable to some onboard solutions such as NVRaid, Sil3114R, etc.. but with 8 ports instead of 4 and some more features such as online raid level migration, online capacity expansion, staggered spinup, etc. On non-full speed accesses, such as network streaming of video files, cpu usage does not go above the 5% idle level by a noticeable amount - so it can still work as a media server storage solution rather efficiently. Very nice cable supplied (8 cables about 3 feet in length with tight fitting connectors, they don't fall out easily). Not sure if its worth the 300 bucks since its not real hardware RAID 5.
