Silverstone LC17 HTPC Case Review
Sep 21, 05
Despite some design quirks, the LC17 gives us a very favourable impression of Silverstone cases. The overall feel and look of the case finish makes even Shuttle look mediocre, which is more important for an HTPC case.
Even though it will take some more work, Silverstone has provided quite a lot of room for expansion. Utilizing HDD both bays, you are able to have six hard drives, which is a significant amount for a HTPC. That's one setup TiVo can't match up easily.
With all the fan placement holes, you are able to install quite a number of extra fans, but other than the side 80 mm fan, it is not suggested to add anything as the noise level will increase with each additional fan. Remember, in a HT setting, people are far more sensitive to noise sources.
All in all, the LC17 is a solid case that does what it is supposed to well. For those who can pay for a more full featured case, there are alternative ones by Silverstone that also have LCDs, remotes and external controls. For everybody else, there's this.

Designed for the living room and intimate personal environments, the LC17 is an HTPC enclosure with quiet appearance and excellent potential for low operational noise. The aluminum front panel is crafted to achieve a generous feeling of substance by minimizing gaps and holes. Everything is either covered or hidden to make sure the look is as clean as possible. Matching the quiet styling of the front panel is an interior that features the latest in HTPC enclosure design. I think that Silverstone has a winner here in the HTPC case market, the case itself is very stylish and subtle, it would make a nice addition to any home entertainment system. Paired with a great cordless keyboard and mouse, and of course a wide screen HDTV, it would just be awesome!

This case is amazing for a HTPC build. It looks great in my TV stand. I get a kick out of people who see it and don't know that it's a computer at all. Very quiet if you set the fan speeds in bios to adjust themselves according to temperature. Case is large enough to accommodate full ATX board and PSU and a decent CPU Heatsink (Mine is the Kingwin KA-9226ACU 4 Heatpipe Copper Heatsink), also fits Arctic Freezer. Highly recommended for any HTPC build!

Built a HTPC using this case and it's been running smoothly for over a year. There are some chips in the paint, but that could be me moving it around. Drive mounting can be challenge for people with big hands. That's the only qualm i have with otherwise a very solid case.

Bought it on sale for $120. It's a nice looking HTPC, maybe not the nicest, but good value for what I paid. I could fit everything I wanted into the case, although I was carefully when purchasing the parts, particular the height of my CPU cooler. It is a bit tight in the case, I had to remove the second HD tray, which I'm not using anyway, in order to make room for cable management.

It is a very nice case. I don't know if it's worth the price but to me it is. The only thing that really pisses me off about this case is the fact you got to use super strong double sided tape to get the covers for the dvd writers on...I put it on slightly crooked(from more then a foot you would never notice) but the tape is so dam strong I can't adjusted it and forcing it scares me I'll break the DVD drive...

I like this case alot. I fondled the idea of an HTPC case for some time now and really critiqued each one only to easily settle for the Lascala 17b. At first I steered clear of any case of this size in thinking this would defeat my idea of something sleek and simple but was only too wrong in my thinking! I'm very happy in knowing I can add a full sized video card, more than 1 HD and if needed a couple of ROM's.

I bought this case to make a HTPC with my old components, after buying a new computer. Here is what I tried to put in this case:

Was looking for a decent looking, not-too-pricey HTPC case. This fit the bill. The only gripe is that mounting additional drives is a bit of a pain because you have to pull out the drive cages to do so, not really a big deal (it's not like I'm swapping drives in this computer all the time anyways). Overall, I really like it.
