Features    [ Edit | History ]

You just got your high speed modem (it could be cable, DSL, fiber optics . . . something nifty), and you've got your computers, and you've got your wireless interface cards. Now you need the final element: the router.

With four wired ports and the wireless connection, you're ready to take on the Internet and all it has to offer. Or maybe you just need a local network off the 'Net for your small office. Maybe you'll hook your desktop up by cable, and carry your wireless laptop to your favorite seat. Control and configuration are easy with browsers like Internet Explorer 8 or Firefox 3.0. (It's best to do your configuration from a hard-wired connection, not the wireless.)

Could this be the router for you? That's your decision, not ours. We'll be here, cheerfully waiting while you make up your mind.

IEEE 802.11B/G COMPLIANTCompliant with the IEEE 802.11b/g protocol, the Linksys WRT54GL smoothly integrates into almost any existing wireless network with up to 54Mbps data transfer speed.

10/100MBPS NETWORK CONNECTIONThe Linksys WRT54GL features a built-in 4-port 10/100Mbps Ethernet switch for direct connections with up to four PCs or additional switches, and one 10/100Mbps WAN port for broadband Internet connection.

HIGH WIRELESS SECURITYThe Linksys WRT54GL supports WPA2 standards for use of the available supreme encryption regardless of client devices and features a built-in SPI firewall to prevent potential attacks from the Internet.

UPNP SUPPORTThe Linksys WRT54GL supports UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) protocol for automatic detection on the network and great compatibility among networking equipment, software and peripherals, making it easier-than-ever to communicate and share resources with other UPnP-enabled devices.

WEB-BASED MANAGEMENTWith the built-in Web-based management feature, configure the Linksys WRT54GL via a web-browser interface.

Summary
I bought this to replace the exact same model I had that finally died after 8-9 years. The blue panels were missing, it been dropped, stepped on, landed on (by a couch), and still worked awesome. Love this system!

Pros
Has worked non-stop for more years than I can remember. It apparently works better than the WRT54G.
Cons
No cons here for me with this one
Summary
I Have owned one of these for more years than I can remember. Maybe 6 years, I'm not quite sure. I'm amazed to see that the exact same model is still for sale. I remember the exact model name because I've heard many good things about this router (it was the reason I bought it to begin with).

Rest assured that this is definitely a quality product.

There's not a lot to say. It's just always worked. I've never used any of the advanced settings, but it was easy enough to go in and change the settings when I switched from cable to DSL to cable and back to a DSL provider again over the years.

Pros
Stable, handle high number connections once you load Tomato or DD-WRT on it.
Cons
Price, G only, 100Mb LAN only. Outdated hardware.
Summary
Owned this for over four years now, still going strong. Gone from my main router to a wireless client to leech neighbours wireless to a wireless G range extender. Still in use but recently bought 2 new routers so I'll probably retiring this soon. Figured I should give it a review. I've only loaded Tomato on it over the past few years. It handled a high number of concurrent connections (when you use BT) but with recent changes to Tomato mods to include IP Bandwidth monitor, the 54GL hardware is showing it's age. It simply cannot keep up. I wouldn't buy this new; if you badly want a router or wireless G range extender and can find a used one for cheap, then this device may be a viable option. Otherwise, go for one of N routers.

Pros
Gives off a very strong signal
Durable
Cons
One of the antennae cracked off so had to tape it
Summary
Lasted 3 years before dying but it was heavily used. Was looking for a possible replacement at the time but Telus gave me a wireless modem when I asked so haven't bothered

Pros
Can be flashed easily with firmware providing advanced functionality. Very, very reliable.
Cons
Not a pretty router.
Summary
I have been purchased and installed close to a dozen of the "L" version routers for friends and work and I have never had a complaint even when I left the stock firmware on. They work well, they are reliable, and when you flash them with Tomato or another stable firmware you get features and reliability which can sometimes only be found in equipment costing many times more. These routers aren't pretty, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I suspect that the only reason Linksys/cisco doesn't make a more powerful version is because it would ruin the market for their commercial routers.

Pros
-Support for third party firmware
-Stability
-Reliability
Cons
Wish it had a faster processor and more memory to support the faster broadband connections :(
My 50mbps connection tops out at 38mbps on this vs. other routers I've tested.
Summary
This router is legendary. Can't really comment on the stock Linksys firmware, but if you're buying this, its probably for Tomato or something else anyways. I've had Tomato on it since day 1 and the two go together like peanut butter and jelly :). Legendary performance

Cons

Summary
Great router! I easily updated this one with DD-WRT firmware and was able to get it configured without issue. This router works perfectly out of the box. It is a fantastic unit for boosting your existing infrastructure or expanding your wireless range.

Experience: 1 Weeks
Pros
No dropped connections
Custom firmware
Cons
Pain to set up
Summary
Bought a certified refurbished router that didn't end up working and had to get an exchange. Replacement worked fine but was still annoying to set up. With that said, everything now works perfectly. If only needing a router for wifi, this old model will do the trick as good, if not better, than any of the newer routers.
