- Cost!! On Sale For $99.99, What A Deal!
- Improvement Over ATI Radeon 1300 That It Replaced.
- Heatsink/Fan Inadequate, But Nothing A Little Aftermarket Cooling Can't Cure.
Bought This Video Card To Replace An Older Radeon 1300, And There Is A Marked Improvement In Performance. For The Price Of $99.99, I Could Not Go Wrong In Purchasing This Card, Even Though I Had To Order An Accellero Heatsink For It, Since It Does Run Warm At Both Idle And Load.

Three Star Rating Due To The Heatsink/Fan.

Runs very quiet with fans on auto, has plenty of power, dx10.
Drivers; they crash every four minutes on average with VPU recover on [various versions, see below]
I'm almost considering returning or fleabaying this card, the drivers from the 8.1 cat series on up to the 8.49betas I snagged from the net are horrible. I run a gigabyte ga-ma78-s2h board[F3 bios] with the onboard 780G[hd3200] gpu built into the Northbridge... it runs more stable by far.

I received the card and then:
- installed a fresh copy of windows XP pro SP1[including all updates to aug07 slipstreamed on disc],
- installed .Net framework all the way up to 3.5, including all service packs along the way,
- installed a fresh copy of directx 9.0c...
- installed the drivers for the mobo off the cd, disabled onboard vid, installed card.
- installed all windows updates, hotfixes, etc

Results: with default drivers off the Diamond disc, I ended up with a VPU recover error every four minutes, sometimes three in a row, sometimes vpu recover would pop up, then BSOD with various Ati2dvag.dll infinite loop error, or another one I forgot to write down. At this point I started running through driver revisions, settling on the 8.49betas from the catalyst betacrew site, as with almost every revision I could not disable VPU recover via the Catalyst Control Center. Once VPU Recover was disabled and CLIStart.exe was removed from the startup, and Catalyst A.I. disabled, system runs fine now.

On the plus side, once the driver nightmare had been resolved and windows installed twice just to make sure...
Image quality is sharp, card has plenty of horsepower for what I need it for. Runs a little sluggish in certain games, I probably should've bought the 3870 or at least a 512mb card, but for the price I paid, a quite solid unit.

Ati's high definition decoding is quite nice, would definately recommend this card for an HTPC.

Experience: 4 Months
-Good Price:Performance ratio
-Fantastic HD decoding
-No DVI -> HDMI dongle included
-No fan control, need to use a 3rd party application
At the time I purchased it, it was the best bang for the buck in terms of 3D performance as I was considering the 8800GT. The deciding factor was that the 8800GT wouldn't work in my Shuttle SN25P.

I have no issues with the HD3850 as it's done everything I need it to including gaming so no real complaints.

Cheap, fast, runs fairly cool, image quality.
nVidia counterparts are faster in the same price range.
Bought as an alternative to a 8800GT for a customer, I have 3870's myself and these are right up there. The card ran quiet and cooler than expected. Ran all the games that were thrown at it at a very reasonable speed, and the image quality was perfect. They may not be as fast as the 8800GT or 9600, but they are still a viable option and are plenty capable.

decent price, good budget with a good power.
none for what you are buying.
Bought this for my budget back up system I like to have when I'm working, modding my main system. I was very pleased with its performance. With my overclocked E2180 t 3.2Ghz I was able to score over 10,000 in 3dmark06. Excellent for a budget card with kick. I would suggest it to anyone who doesn't want to spend too much, and wants to enjoy the latest games.

Experience: 6 Weeks
Fast compared to old card.
relatively inexpensive
none that I can see
I upgraded my system recently from an AGP support graphics mobo to a new PCI one. When upgrading a system so completely like I did I was left with very little room for a video card int he budget, because I had to also buy a new processor and ram. This card is light years ahead of my old Geforce 6600. My view on this product may not be as comprehensive as some others because my old system was quite slow by modern standards, and my new system may be aswell I don't know. What I do know is that buying this card at this price for the performance gain it gave me was an easy one. If your looking for top end performance look to the 3870 but if your on a budget and every penny counts this is money well spent. It will provide you with atleast 2 years of good gaming use in which time you could save to buy something a little quicker. If your a casual gamer or a gamer on a budget buy this card you won't be disappointed.

Price perfomance ratio
single slot cooling
low power consumption
Not as fast as the 8800GT
I originally got my first 3850 over a month ago and was quite pleased with. While this card is not the fastest on the market the amount of money to put into purchase it versus the performance you get is really good. Especially when you team 2 of them up in crossfire. The other advantage this has over the more powerful cards is that the cooling solution is only single slot so you don't lose a slot on the back of your case for cooling. I would recommend this card for anyone on a tight gaming budget.

- Price
- Performance
- Temperature (92°C!)
The card is cheap and performance was very good in the games I tried. However the fan always runs at low speed no matter what is the temperature or what I'm doing, so the card get as high as a constant 92°C while gaming (in a very good ventilated case). I tried to tweak the fan with some softwares I found on the net and now the firmware is buggy, the fan randomly starts spinning like crazy. So I recommand waiting for a fix from ATI.

Great Price for quality card
Nice performance
Hastle free installation
Weak on the documentation and software
Overall have been pleasantly surprised with this card. I was waiting for the 3870 to finally arrive, but couldn't, so I went with this card. No regrets so far.

Pretty good numbers for $159(Boxing Week)
Reasonable power useage.
Did not like the fan control curve!
Fairly long card?
Realistically this card is a steal compared to last generations price to performance ratio(shakes my X1950Pro for less $$). I'm only running 1440x900 so the 256mb ram is not to big an issue for me. Using Rivatuner to control fan speed, find it keeps the card cooler.

Comment: results in both single and Crossfire

Comment: The Radeon HD 3850 is a bit slower than its more expensive sibling and as such ends up being tremendous competition for current mid-range cards like the GeForce 8600 GTS or Radeon HD 2600 XT
