They crown the WD Velociraptor at the triple crown winner for acoustics, power usage, and speed. That is, when you remove it from the bulky, useless heatsink.
The new VelociRaptor WD3000GLFS will ship in May at retail prices of approximately $300, and it is the fastest and coolest 3.5"-like hard drive you can get for desktop PCs.

I originally bought this drive for its performance features.
Today, you can find drives with similar performance specs but with much larger capacities and lower prices (ie: WD Caviar Black line which I also own)

I bought this because SSD is not ready yet. This drive replaces a noisy 150GB Raptor X. The performance is slightly better but the additional capacity is a nice welcome. It should be noted that 7,200 RPM drives such as the Caviar Black are almost as fast as this baby for a much smaller price and larger capacity.

This is the fastest consumer mechanical hard drive you can get on the market today. Awesome transfer rates, very fast seek times. Performance wise, for normal operations just as fast as a much more expensive SAS drive (even exceeds performance in certain desktop operations), though it lags behind in raw sequential transfer rates and large volumes of IO requests. One of the best upgrades you can do to get a more responsive system (such as when starting applications, editing multimedia files, etc).

I bought this drive because I wanted the fastest I can get without going to expensive SSD drives. 300GB was enough space for me. I'm happy with the speed of the drive, but I find it noisy when seeking. My old drive was a Hitachi and you could'nt hear a thing from it, so I'm really struggling to accept the Raptor. Still a good buy.

WOW, this is a whole new experience fo me! I just couldn't stand my rattling TB drive anymore and pure frustration made me buy this baby. I thought I was going to need a special enclosure to keep it quiet, but this is one silent speed monster! I'm impressed and I do not even look at 7200 drives anymore. (maybe just for storage)

Simply the best hard drive the money can purchase at the moment. I migrated my vista partition from an old Raptor X because the space on it was getting way too short. 300gb is great and will keep my vista partition happy forever. Incredibly fast too. Buy this if you want the creme de la creme of hard drives.

Really fast, before i had a Raid0 array with 2 Raptor 150g and i must say that i don't feel any slow down from my previous setup, this one is quiter then the 150g and it's cooler. Very impressive drive, maybe i'll go back to Raid0 for Christmas with an other one !

I didn't think the previous generation raptors were worth spending the money on but the new v-raptors really are worth it. They are nearly silent and use less power. So if your near capacity with your power supply you need not worry
about upgrading your power supply. Also very fast. Hands down the best drive for personal computers in my mind.

Product Warranty
First 30 days limited warranty through NCIX.com. The remainder of the two year warranty is provided directly by the manufacturer.
Warranty length may vary per specific model. Western Digital Raptor and Caviar RE series enterprise drives are covered by a 5 year warranty. Caviar and Caviar Blue & Green desktop drives are covered by a 2 year warranty for OEM drives, and a 1 year warranty for Retail.
Warranty coverage for drives is covered by NCIX for the first thirty (30) days with the remainder of the warranty covered by Western Digital.
