Introduction

ap·o·gee: The farthest or highest point; the apex; a final climactic stage

The Apogee™ GTZ is Swiftech's new flagship water-block. While it shares the same name with its predecessors, it also leaps beyond the GT and GTX performance charts thanks to an entirely new design that pushes and refines both thermal and mechanical specifications to the limits of today's technology.

Performance Data

  • Thermal Design

Thermal design of the cooling engine combines the benefits of direct coolant impingement over the CPU area with an entirely new copper base plate design which is primarily characterized by a pin matrix composed of 225 µm (0.009") micro structures. This results in a 20% improvement in thermal resistance compared to the Apogee™ GTX.

When the Apogee™ GTZ is integrated in an actual system, the hydraulic pressure drop remains well within the efficiency range of current high-pressure pumps such as the MCP350 or MCP655 as illustrated in the graph below:

  • Mechanical Design

Mechanical design of the copper base plate is optimized for Intel® socket LGA 775 and 771. The assembly features a patent pending design characterized by a topographically mapped CPU contact area which results in a 75% and up to 300% improvement in TIM joint thermal resistance compared to the Apogee™ GT/GTX series. Other types of sockets such as AMD® socket F, AM2, and 940 as well as upcoming sockets similar in design to that of socket 775 may also benefit from the enhanced contact area.

  • Retention Mechanism

An enhanced tool free retention system using thumb-nuts paired with a universal socket 775 motherboard back-plate guarantee high quality, safe and repeatable mounts.

  • Comparative Temperature Data

The following tables report the data collected from testing performed with actual retail processors under 100% load using CPU Burn. Published results are the best of a minimum of 5 mounts using the manufacturer supplied retention mechanism. Flow rate and coolant inlet temperature were maintained at a constant and arbitrarily chosen 1.5 gpm and 30 °C respectively. These results are indicative of our test bench settings and of the tested processors only. Results may vary from one processor to another. Competitive data is provided for comparative purposes, and is only representative of the specific waterblock samples tested here. Where different nozzles were available, best results are provided. Where temperatures only are given, these are averaged- out core values reported by the processor Digital Thermal Sensors (DTS).

Motherboard and CPU Compatibility

The Apogee™ GTZ is shipped with an Intel® Core™ 2 (socket 775) compatible hold-down plate and complies with socket 775 keep-out specification, thus guaranteeing compatibility with all socket 775 type motherboards.

Two optional hold-down plates provide compatibility with the following processors:

  • Part # MCW60-1U-HD, provides compatibility with
    • Intel® Xeon socket 771, and legacy 603, 604
    • AMD® socket F, and legacy 754, 939, 940
    • Due to the hybrid nature of this hold-down solution, users are advised to check for possible clearance issues with their particular motherboards by using the schematic below.

  • Part # ApogeeGTX-AM2-HD, provides compatibility with AMD® Socket AM2, and is fully compliant with the component keep-out specification.

Fittings & tubing compatibility

The Apogee™ GTZ ships pre-installed with chrome plated high flow 1/4" BSPP x 1/2" barbs and also includes a pair of 3/8" barb fittings.

  • The CNC machined C110 copper base is lapped, passivated (to maintain a bright finish) and features a 225 µm (0.009") micro pin matrix.

  • The cold plate surface is topographically mapped to provide an optimized TIM joint with socket 775 & 771 processors. As a result, the Apogee™ GTZ requires a specific mounting orientation with respect to the CPU socket in order to optimize performance as illustrated below:

 

  • The housing is CNC machined out of durable Delrin material, and designed for impingement cooling over the CPU hottest area. The flow path, as illustrated below shows that the Apogee™ GTZ is port specific: inlet and outlet cannot be interchanged.

Summary
I bought one a year ago to mount on an E8600 (LGA 775). I had no issues with it so I bought a second one recently to mount on a Core I7 920 (LGA 1366). It came with the LGA 1366 back plate. This time I had problems. Very frustrating problems.

For starters, the copper surface of the block was scratched rather significantly. If that had been the only issue, I would have given it a 4 star rating.

Secondly, and this is where it gets spicy, the back plate mounting pegs didn't line up properly with the holes on the motherboard. I struggled to get it on and scratched the back of the motherboard in the process. Fortunately it was superficial but it did expose some copper. I was pissed!

Thirdly, I was able to mount the block the first time around but was getting uneven temps and spikes between the 4 cores so I took it off to verify that the pressure was even. It was not, even though the mounting mechanism suggests that it should insure even pressure across the cpu. When I tried to mount it again, two of the four screws got stripped due to the tension and they wouldn't stay in. I took my other Apogee and put the LGA 1366 bracket on it. Same thing happened! Two of the screws got stripped.
I was so frustrated! Luckily I had 4 machine screws with matching diameter and thread as the block's thumb screws and using some metal washers and the springs from the original mechanism, I jerry-rigged my own retention mechanism that ended up being way more effective in controlling the pressure. I also ended up lapping it to get rid of the scratch.

For those reasons, I cannot recommend this product.

Summary
This block keeps my Q6600 t 3.6ghz (1.47V in windows) under 50C on prime94 (small FTTs) with an ambient of about 22C. This is with 2 x mcr320 radiators with zm-f3 fans running at 7 volts and an mcp-655 pump (setting 5).

This is just STUNNING performance. My old Apogee GT was about 5-6C higher than this. My idles are also around 29C which is a good 7C lower than the GT. I am not sure whether you will get this performance increase as most reviews point to only 4-5C improvement. My GT may have been incorrectly tightened - a problem that you will never have with the GTZ as the installation is the simplest I have ever seen. It is designed to give you the perfect amount of pressure on all 4 screws.

Have been happy with this block for the week I've owned it. Stellar reviews from all the sites - my only grips is that the copper base of my block is less-than-perfect - it has a couple visible scratches, although the rest of the block is smooth and shiny.

The 1366 mounting plate for this, on the other hand, is a different story...

Summary
If you know what you're doing, go with the V2. It's for a more advanced user, but honestly you're not going to be able to tell the difference between these two. The barbs you get are crappy (You get 1/2: and 1/4"), grab yourself some compressions and Arctic Silver 5. the grease you get with that isn't good. overall, it isn't the best build quality. your money goes towards the frills it provides (i.e. thermal grease, barbs, black clamps, retention bracket) << something important to consider. I don't regret buying this but I would go for the fuzion v2 instead. Either way, you're looking at a high-quality cpu block, but not the highest. the fact that it has precision screws which guarantee a perfect fit tell you that some of your money goes to things like that. great for a beginner, but if you've water cooled at least once before, and aer looking t do it again, d-tek fuzion v2 all the way!!!

Bought this to use with my new I7 920 CPU. What makes this unit a sweet deal is the ease to remove and reinstall the water block with out the back plate dropping off. The 4 tape pads place nicely on the back of the Mobo.

The I7 adaptor plate was a 2 min job to install.

Temps with my Koolance RP 1000 BK are m 32 C.

I bought this lately to use with my i7. With the new hold down plate, this block really works well. Troughout my watercooling experience, I have used the D-tek fuzion v1 , v2 ans this one. I can honestly say I did not see any significant difference between the 3 and since the mounting of the GTZ is so much better, I givre the crown to this one. I think they should start to include the 1366 hold down plate with the new ones.

VERY slick looking CPU block with GREAT performance that just can't be beat. Brings my q6600 down 10,15 degrees off stock cooler (not to mention with a 8800GTS in the loop as well), which is absoultely outstanding. My only gripe with it is some small quality details - the barbs are not the greatest but are acceptable. Some other comments were about the screws there but they were ok for me. But EXCELLENT block overall!

I bought this as part of a custom kit. My temps on a q9550 z3.2 are around 30c idle and 38c load. About a 18c drop  on full load from previous air cooling without any overclock. This was my first water cooling setup and must say it was simple to install. The bracket included has sticky pads so no fishing around to get the mounting screws in. Would highly recommend this for any quad core owners.
