Pros
Storage space. Reliability. "Some kind" of energy efficiency. Tool-less.
Cons
Less then satisfactory GBLAN speeds just like its brothers, the DNS-321 and 323. Ultra noisy to have 3 such devices standing on a shelf over your computer. Annoying flashing of way too powerful DELs when activity in the devices.
Summary
I own all the family: DNS-321 (2x2Tb - confirmed owner here on NCIX), 323 (2x2Tb - confirmed owner here on NCIX) and 343 (4x2Tb - bought elsewhere).

I must admit that for all of them, I have always had trouble getting the bigger HD drives to work in them without some firmware upgrade/useless tech support from DLink. Not forgetting that some Caviars don't even fit into the device. The HDDs are too thick.

For John or Jane Everybody, I would recommend any or all of the DNS family by DLink... Providing you won't want to store lots and lots of stuff over your network... Let's say not above 8 Gb... Or buying your 3rd device such as I. And also that you have patience. It can take up to a full wek 24x7 to fill 1 single 2 Tb drive at the max speed of the device.

In either of these cases:
1- As I now own over 16 Gb of stuff to store on my network, and growing,
2- you are considering buying this device at it's fair/current market value...

Consider the price and time I had to put in these devices to get to work... Then upload all the content at a maximum speed of 15 megs per seconds... I would advise anyone to... Build your own system with a passive PSU, a big and cheap case, a bundle special on a cheap board/CPU with net, video and all built on board... A Gig of RAM or so. And install either any flavors of Linux with Samba (my choice is Ubuntu), or some kind of open source NAS package (consider openfiler or freenas).

Apart from the price of the drives, you'll end up saving a whole lot of money and you'll get TRUE GBLAN SPEEDS OF 100 Mb/sec back and forth!!!

As for energy efficiency: As I now own 3 of these devices, even when they are sleeping and consuming as low as 3 Watts each, I am pretty close to my custom built system with a passive 80+ Gold PSU at 12 Watts when sleeping.

I can still put at least 7 other HDD in the case making me save 2 DNS-343 or 4 DNS-321-323.

So you can buy this product with peace of mind or consider other options for storing large amounts of data.

Pros
Performance, silent, too much stockage!
Cons
A more recent configuration (Intel Atom) should be appreciated.
Summary
A very good NAS for those need more than 6to or mirroring their configuration. With de Lan compatibility it is quickly accessible.

Pros
Small, afordable, front display is great, looks like a quality build.
Cons
Slow, a quite noisy, web interface in SLOW and a little confusing.
Summary
This unit is great if you don't need to much performance and you're ready to configure a little bit by try&error as the interface is not so clear at first.
I'm actually copying my file on a RAID 5 at 10 mbit/sec, and the unit is directly connected from the computer to the device (I've managed to configure static IP to do so).
So it's not fast, but if you mostly need it for small backup, like if you're a programmer like me, that's just nice, and affordable.
I could not tell you much about the reliability as I only own this unit for 4 days now.

About the noise, it's because their is 2 really small fan (like 50 or 60mm) that run really fast. It's as noisy as a rackmount server. If your harddrive get hot, while your transfering stuff, the sound will be really a problem. But overal, if you fit it somewhere that will cut the sound a little bit, it's ok.

The default firmware 1.03 is buggy. In my case, the device hang quite often. It just stop to respond, and I had to pull off the plug.

The support guy was useless, he only asked me to factory reset the brand new factory default unit.

But the problem is known in the community, and the beta 1.04 firmware seems to have solved my problem, as the device didn't hang for over a week now, while I had to reboot it daily under the 1.03 version.

------

So:
It's an "ok" product if you don't have much budget.
If you can affort something more pricey, I would recommand that you look for something more quiet, and maybe that come with a stable firmware by default.

Pros
*Does Raid 5
*Supports up to 4x 2TB Drives with no issues with the latest firmware update
Cons
* Transfer speeds to the Device Cap out at 10.2 Megs a sec over a Gigabit network with Jumbo frames turned on using a 12" Cat6E Network cables connected to my DGS-1024D.

* Just like the DNS-323 it has a Loud Fan
* Can get a little toasty, mine sits around 50c / 111f
* Isn't a True Gigabit device
* Tech Support is a Joke from what I can tell the few times I had to call in. The agent I talked with had no idea the difference between a router and a switch. She also sounded like she was a robot reading off what was on her screen and I also had to repeat myself more times that I would like to admit. I wanted to jump through the phone and start showing her how to use her computer just so I could end up resolving my issue. I gave up on D-Links so called Tech support and just Googled my issue and within 5 minuted I found and resolved the problem I had unlike the Hour I spent on the phone with D-Link with only to end up hanging up on them because DLinks agent had no clue.
Summary
The DNS-343 like the DNS-323 (which I also own) are great little devices, since I recently filled up my DNS-323 with 2x WD Green 1.5TB Drives I picked up the DNS-343 with 4x 2tb WD Green drives.

My entire network runs through the DGS-1024D and which is then connected to a D-Link DIR-825 router. I use all CAT6E cables.

Transfer speeds between computers (using WD Green Drives I can get between 60 - 90+ megs a sec) However Transfering files to and from these DNS-323 and DNS-343 will cap out well under 15megs a sec.

For storing Multimedia content like HD Movies, Music and Photos to stream to a HTPC case they do the job well and with the built in Raid options you be rest at ease knowing that your Data will be safe.

However if your looking for a way to transfer files faster between computers faster you may just be better off and getting the Drobo and then sharing it on a computer over the network.

I'm giving this device 3 Stars because they sell these devices as 10/100/1000 and they are NOT. I'm Happy with the device, it does what I want it to do and its small enough that I can simply put it in the closet with the rest of my servers ans networking gear. However maybe next time Dlink is thinking about slapping the 10/100/1000 sticker on a device they will make sure it can support those speeds.

Pros
Small, compact and easy to install and manage the device.
Drives are easy to install, no cables required to connect
Cons
Does not support 1.5tb drives in raid 5 (supposedly in next firmware release)
Gets a bit warm
gigabit transfers not as fast as it should be
Summary
I bought this with 4 x 1tb seagate drives and configured into a raid 5 volume giving me 3tb of useable disk space. The web interface is fairly well organized and quite easy to navigate and intuitive to use. My main beef with this unit is the transfer speeds, on a 100mb network, i would get around 9-10megabytes per second, on a gig network, it would only go up to around 15megabytes/sec. I didn't enable jumbo frames as my switch does not support it, so it might be better. Overall though, nice compact device, and it looks pretty good too.
