-Super deal for $229 on sale.
-It comes with a starter toner cartridge but that's good for 1000 sheets - so not like starter ink-jet cartridges.
- Manufacturer brand toner packs are priced very well and available on sale.
-Build quality seems good and I'm impressed with prints and scans.
- All works fine with USB/wired network/wireless. I'm using the same line for phone/fax/DSL. You have lots of features - enough to run in a SOHO. You can even set up user accounts with passwords/permissions. If you set up the machine wireless, even with WPA, that could be a good thing...
- I was concerned because reviews mentioned WEP. It does WPA, so security isn't an issue.
Windows users have lots of provided software and easy install but see below.
I'm another Linux user. In my case I had to go to the Brother "Linux" site and learn how to properly install the drivers for fax/printer and scanner - because the printer was not included on my lists. That being said, I'm impressed with the level of support. There are Deb's, RPM's and FULL instruction with examples of how to properly install from the terminal. All the features will install and work really well - USB/Network (wired/wireless).
- Some reviews have mentioned slow scan speeds under Windows with provided software. That's an issue with the provided software (XP/Win7). Everything works super under Linux, but Win users would want to know that there is a fix without buying software other than provided.
-If you place the machine high, then you'll have trouble reading LCD - but otherwise should be OK.
Read the instructions. The box and printer come with hand-holds on sides. Do not pick up printer from below.
I could sure have used this last year, but a printer/scanner got me by for lots of long distance business. Using email attachments is not as secure as fax, unfortunately and govt offices don't take email attachments..
I got this because I knew that I wanted a fax handy. The scanner is all I need for documents, and is fast under Linux. Print quality is super and comes with "Ecology" toner save (prints lighter).
It comes with all sorts of sleep functions because with fax it needs to be on all the time. It warms up fast enough for anyone who only switches on to use, or when they know they will receive faxes.
This is a SOHO multi-function machine which is on sale because now there is a move to color lasers. Given the low cost of supplies it is a great home machine. It has more features than most home users will ever need - but they are there if needed.. I'm left with the impression that this is actually built to work for a while - look at the recommended prints/month. Look at old prices for this machine for that matter..
It has to work for a year to be worthwhile, even with warranty - but it has to do better than many ink-jets.

Very Linux (Ubuntu) friendly
Very easy to set Up
Print like a perfectly
Scanner is easy to set up (even on Linux) and works very well
none so far
I've bought this multifunction printer to be use totally on Linux (Ubuntu 10.10 actually). Linux User don't even have to put the CD in because Ubuntu detects it and install the driver automatically. I've been able to print in less then 5 min after the power was connected. I use only the wireless connection and it's been very easy to configure. To install the scanner you have to go on brother to download to correct driver. Just follow the instruction and it should not be a problem. Little hint here, you can find the ip address of the printer in the menu option.
Its a must for every linux user with the need of a cheap multifonction printer!
