Cons 1. Goes to sleep even when switched to ALWAYS ON in OS. 2. Takes a long time to wake up (head park issue). 3. Found it to be unreliable.
Summary I own one of these 3TBs drives and five of the 2TBs versions. They all suffer from the same issues. (Tested on 3 computers). The drive is fine for storage only but it is inadequate for anything else. If you use it as your media drive (video playback) you will be disappointed. The drive has the tendency to go to sleep even if sleep mode is disabled in the OS. Seems that the old “HEAD PARK” problem is still an issue after all the updates WD released. Pausing HD video playback then unpausing after a few minutes causes synchronization issues that can last for up to 10 seconds while video and audio catches up. None of my 7200RPM or my 2.5" 5400 drives have this issue. I've updated the firmware on all drives and I'm still experiencing the same problem. Also, one of the drives failed after less than 6 months. Personally I will stick with Seagate and Hitachi from now on. The single saving grace for this drive is that it’s very quiet. You won’t be able to hear it over the ambient noise in your computer room.
Summary I have two of these in my Drobo, they work just fine. They top out at around 85 MB/s, but that isn't a problem since the Drobo itself tops out around 25 MB/s. One a price-per-gigabyte basis, the Western Digital Greens are very competitive, and these drives continue that trend.
Summary It seems the hard drive is too big for its own good. Recommended to partition the drive to smaller sections before use. Or just use it for a raid array (raid 5 or better).
I use it for storage drive, so I don't do much read or write to the drive. But after 1-2 years after purchasing this hard drive It lost its NTFS format, bad sectors detected. I was unable to recover the data from it using consumer level data recovery program.
After a deeper look at the problem. The drives PCB seems to be burnt. Advanced RMA the product from WD.
Summary I picked up two of these drives for my recent computer build. I've always liked West Digital's product and the price for the drives was right. They're not the fastest drives on the market, but I plan to use them as data drives supporting an solid state drive. Good value for the money I invested.
Pros got it on sale for 69.99$ for a green drive it still has a awesome transfer rate for a movie/music storage drive it does the trick
Cons the current price for the same hard drive
Summary using 1 of these at the moment in a htpc to store all the movies/tv shows/music and so forth on, it transfers files very fast over the gigabit home network also which helps when i am moving files from my computer onto the htpc. Hoping the prices come down soon because i would like another 2!
Cons If you don t get it on rebate it's kind of expesive
Summary It is a very good product but be sure you wait for a special. If not I find it kind of pricy. My PC boots in less than 20 seconds. One thing to worry is the huge space, if it crashes you might lose a lot of information. I find it very silent also compared to my old hard disk.
This WD Caviar Green drive makes it possible for energy-conscious customers to build systems with higher capacity and the right balance of system performance, ensured reliability, and energy conservation.
