I see three reasons why you'd want the Core i7 3820:
1. You need PCIe 3.0 today and/or you need more PCIe lanes than a Core i7 2600K can provide,
2. You need tons of memory bandwidth for a particular application,
3. You want a 2600K but you need a platform that can support more memory &

I bought this just to get a foot in the door in the LGA 2011 platform but I'm not disappointed at the performance. I moved from an AMD system for the first time in 10 years due to simple performance and it paid off. A move to 6 core or Ivy Bridge-E if it's still in Intel's plans down the road is coming.

I bought this with a plan to upgrade the processor when Ivy Bridge E comes out but now its gonna have to really be a big jump for me to do that...This is a really nice processor - I matched this with a Rampage IV extreme and 4 x 4GB Corsair dominator platinum 1866 and havent looked back.
Overclocking to 4.7+ Ghz was possible but required a hefty voltage increase so I backed off to a very nice 4.5 Ghz and can run stable at 1.325 v. Runs cool - in the 40's even under massive BF3 sessions and barely cracks the 60's with intel burn test. Note that I'm running an H100 for cooling which help keep things nice and chilly!

Upgraded to use current 1156 i5-750 in HTPC build. Was not expecting huge difference in performance but was pleasantly surprised. Gaming smoother and simply crushes encoding times.

This is a great processor, runs cool with my H100, turbo boost pushes it to 3.8GHZ with ease. I went with Socket 2011, with the hope that Intel releases future Extreme based processors for socket 2011.

Other seem to have a high success rate overclocking this CPU. Most don't mention what motherboard they are using. Left setting to default and run at stock speed. Don't do any benching but seem somewhat faster then the previous i7-9xx generation. Still expensive, nobody buy Intel until they have an overstock sale.

tired of my old X58, so i finally plunged into an X79 setup. overclocks easily and well. at first i bought a MSI-X79A GD45.. solid overclocker but only a 100mhz BSCLK(alot of cheaper MBs, BSCLK cant be adjusted sadly, even tho its in the BIOS, it just wont boot), wich left me with a 4.3Ghz machine... 1.3volts to the CPU. went from 4GBx4 Corsair Vengence DDR3-1600 9-9-9-24-2T to 4GBx4 TEAM Group DDR3-2133 10-10-10-2T, it benches 10% faster, and feels quicker too. Decided to upgrade my MB to an ASUS P9X79 Pro, 4.53Ghz, RAM timings 10-10-10-T1 2167mhz, very comfy 1.3v CPU and 1.55v RAM. yes it will do more, but i really dont like volting her up honestly.... and its only marginally faster. im running a triple rad and HD7970 setup, and when shes working, theres alot of heat being dissipated from my case.
