Comment: Both the 3TB and 1TB version are the most energy efficient and quiet models we've tested in their respective capacities. Seek noise is almost nonexistent and vibration levels are excellent.

Comment: Western Digital's Red family is a well-rounded offering aimed at home- and SOHO-based NAS appliances. The Red drives aren’t as attractive once you step outside of Western Digital's target usage model of small business network-attached storage and into more demanding professional application

Comment: "...the WD Red is a purpose-built drive that solves the NAS storage problem like no other drive does..."

I bought this disk along with 3 others from different manufacturers to re-build a raid array of 4 drives. I mixed this with 3 other manufacturer's drives because I got burned in the past with a double disk failure when I bought all 4 of the same model and from the same manufacturer and at the same time. This time I wasn't going to let it happen like that again. This drive runs great as expected from WD. Before installation in my RAID I did a 7-day x 24 hour random write/read/verify test over the entire surface along with tests of 1's. 0's walking bits, etc. During this test there was never any failure, but it was the slowest transfer rate in my bunch of 4. However it is still fast enough when used in a RAID, as it's intended for. It is getting about 290MB/s when all other drives exceed 350MB/s. During the test it was also the coolest temperature drive in the array too, and I think this helps with the reliability and longevity expected from the Red drives.

I have 8 of these at home (5 in a Thecus N5550 NAS and 3 in my tower). I've never had an issue with any. Meanwhile I'm on my 3rd external Seagate drive in 2 years. Both are plugged into the same UPS. (Read More)

13,500 power-on hours in my NAS and still running like clockwork. No complaints, good read and write speeds and so far good reliability -- especially for their low price point. Will buy two more when these two eventually die. (Read More)

Well, two of these sitting in an NAS and haven't failed yet, so I'm happy. Can't hear them outside of the unit. (Read More)

Got this for a home server and the drives have been working great. Their on 24/7 and I had no problems so far with them. I like the warranty of 3 years but I wish that they were 5 years like the blacks are. The price is also a bit high and I almost thought of going to a cheaper option, in the end though I did not regret my purchase. (Read More)

Reliable workhorses, these fall firmly within the price/performance midpoint.

Ordered on Monday, received on Tuesday! wow, great shipping! (Mississauga to Montreal).

I got this WD red to replace a WD Green that has a bad status after 3 years (warranty is only 2 years). It performed as expected. Red and Green are the same disk, just the software is optimized for Raid. It's a bit pricy compared to other disk but warranty is 3 years (and WD Black with 5 years warranty is a bit pricy), so this one is a good compromised. (Read More)

I have a lot of theses in Qnap NAS. Can't be better. Some other brands failed overtime, mostly Seagate drives, but no WD Red died so far. (Read More)

I bought this for my PC replacement, its fast and reliable. It's expensive for the number of GB/$ but its worth it at the end. (Read More)

I've had mixed luck with WD before, with drives failing, but WD has good customer support and reasonable price/performace. Too bad the warranty is relatively short. (Read More)
