Comment: Both the 3TB and 1TB version are the most energy efficient and quiet models we've tested in their respective capacities. Seek noise is almost nonexistent and vibration levels are excellent.

Comment: Western Digital's Red family is a well-rounded offering aimed at home- and SOHO-based NAS appliances. The Red drives aren’t as attractive once you step outside of Western Digital's target usage model of small business network-attached storage and into more demanding professional application

Comment: "...the WD Red is a purpose-built drive that solves the NAS storage problem like no other drive does..."

I have 10 of the 3TB model and 4 of the 6TB model in use. They have been reliable and fast, unlike the RE 2TB which 5 out of 10 units have developed bad sectors so far...

I installed it in the computer, created a partition and formated it as NTFS, then I've managed to put 300 GB of data on it, no crash.

Purchased in December 2014 and sad to report that the disk began failing this week. Going through the support process with WD now and hoping it can be resolved quickly.

Plug and use...I switch my old green drive (wich i will insert  in a external bay) to this one wich give me a lot more speed. My windows 7 already can create  a 3To drive (i had already WD software installed from my old drive). Like usual, im really satified with WD product. (Read More)

Got 2 of these drives from NCIX, super fast shipping, and great packaging. I use a lot of WD drives and never had any problems.

I have had good experience with WD, this one is replacing a seagate of same size that died after 3 years. Will see how it goes.. (Read More)

This is a good drive that, being made for NAS, should last many years of 24/7 usage. Contrary to the green edition, this drive offer a good rotational speed, true 7200rpm... The green is, unfortunatelly, 5600rpm (hence the "more than 5400, less than 7200 that they say).

However, I was deceived by the poor packaging that ncix did, which is NOT apropriate for an hard drive: double layer of small bubble? This is totally inapropriate, if the box would have been dropped the hard drive would be DEAD. The drive work, but I can not trust the reliability yet due to the poor packaging. Time will tell if any damage has been made. (Read More)

I can't rate something like a hard drive becuase it is a time related issue. The "reds" are new to me and are designed for RAIDS so should be fine for my Drobo 5D.

I bought this disk along with 3 others from different manufacturers to re-build a raid array of 4 drives. I mixed this with 3 other manufacturer's drives because I got burned in the past with a double disk failure when I bought all 4 of the same model and from the same manufacturer and at the same time. This time I wasn't going to let it happen like that again. This drive runs great as expected from WD. Before installation in my RAID I did a 7-day x 24 hour random write/read/verify test over the entire surface along with tests of 1's. 0's walking bits, etc. During this test there was never any failure, but it was the slowest transfer rate in my bunch of 4. However it is still fast enough when used in a RAID, as it's intended for. It is getting about 290MB/s when all other drives exceed 350MB/s. During the test it was also the coolest temperature drive in the array too, and I think this helps with the reliability and longevity expected from the Red drives.

I have 8 of these at home (5 in a Thecus N5550 NAS and 3 in my tower). I've never had an issue with any. Meanwhile I'm on my 3rd external Seagate drive in 2 years. Both are plugged into the same UPS. (Read More)
