Does not smell of noxious plastic like many other fans.
I bought this fan for an unusual application: For use on a telescope cooling system. The requirements were therefor different: A low operating voltage well below 12 volts, low noise, low vibration and, last but not least, no smell. I took a gamble that a decently high quality fan like this would not have that horrendous bitter acrid plastic smell associated with other fans! It paid off as there is only the very mildest aroma of plastic. Fruitless google searches could not answer the simple question of whether the Noctua fans reek of plastic. (flame retardants? Mold release agent? Cheap low grade plastics? Who knows what it is that makes some fans unbearable. I had to throw away two 120mm and two 80mm Sunon fans back in about 02' due to smell that was, no exaggeration, filling the computer room and not dissipating with time. I switched to Zalman fans that were not too bad.)

The Noctua 80mm fulfills all of these requirements. It operates at a nice low speed on 6 volts for gentle flushing of the radiating infrared radiation (heat) emitted from the internal mirror support systems of the telescope. And the exhaust, directed towards the observers face, does not smell. This fan is incredibly quiet, sincerely inaudible beyond 60cm, when running at around 6 volts.

Curious color design choice with these Noctua fans. Makes one wonder why they chose to do this? The answer can be found in a blatant series of clues on their website. On all of the many reviews I read there is this one reoccurring quibble - "the color is weird!"

-Good performance.
I bought 2 of these for my Norco RPC-4224 and they are doing the job so far so I'd recommend them for a server.

Experience: 2 Months

Looks, reliablity
Installed one in the front of my case to a fan controller. I can't hear it when it's turned to its lowest setting. I made a tunnel from that fan up to the intake of my 670 GTX 4 gig and when gaming I turn my noctua up to max, and it's still fairly quite. And my 670 runs very cool while playing games maxed out.

Experience: 4 Years

Quiet blades, 'purr' wind sound at 12V.
Extremely quiet motor, no high pitched noise at any speed.
Have been operating at full speed for 4 years. Long bearing life.
Move a good amount of air for the noise level.
Includes two speed adapters for two slower fixed RPM settings, rubber mounts and 4-pin Molex adapter.
For some reason, it seems that I even after a year, I don't have to clean the dust from the blades quiet like other fans.
Expensive, however, they cost $16.99 in 2009 yet are $15.99 today in 2013.
Could be balanced better, however dynamic balancing is time consuming and expensive.
I purchased two of these on April 2 2009 from NCIX, and have been using them at 12V ever since. I used them to replace a Cooler Master, who's bearing gave up the ghost and grind like a cutting saw. The other is general case circulation with a ULNA adapter. Some people wonder why anyone bothers to buy them with the prices and other brands that are available. I know my reason is because Noctua provided good airflow rates and pressure while remaining quiet or at least diffuse sounding. Others create  a steady midrange tone and all to often emit a second series of high frequency PWM switching sounds that leaves my ears begging for mercy. I do recommend Noctua because they work, they're quiet, and they last.

I was impressed enough that I recently came back and bought an NF-12 1300 120MM. I was so happy with this one which turned out deeper toned and quieter while moving more air than the 80MM, that I bought another matching 120MM to run together at low rpm and the 60MM model for a power supply. If I could get Noiseblockers fans here in Canada easily, I would give them a go in other projects but I am satisfied.

Experience: 7 Days

Quiet at 1920rpm, moves a lot of air
gangly colors
would prefer switch rather than manually switching ULN/LN cables
Bought 2 of these 80mm Noctua's as exhaust fans for my HTPC. Needed fans that would move a lot of air yet quiet at the same time as the OEM fans that came with the Silverstone HTPC case were quiet loud at 2000rpm.
These fans are connected to the Gigabyte SYS fans 3 pin board without any of the supplied low noise adapters and they both operate at 1920rpm and very very quiet. Extremely pleased.

Experience: 1 Years

Quiet, moves a decent amount of air, great build quality.
Somewhat expensive.
Used this fan for a sff case and for it's small size it moves quite a bit of air, while at the same time is nearly silent. Nice to have a standard 3 pin, sleeved cable but for the price it's not surprising. Immune to the color-scheme now, but if you need a dead silent fan that still moves a good amount of air this is a good choice.

Experience: 3 Days

silent fan for HTPC
the rubbers are not easy to install
I like Noctua fans b/c they are quite and don't make noise.. Good for a HTPC..

Experience: 1 Weeks

Very silent! Lots of accessories included.
Bought this fan to cool the heatsink of an old Athlon 64 X2 3800+ in a htpc project. I wanted the thing to be as silent as possible and this fan helped me achieve this very well. You'll understand that the processor is almost never under big load and is not overclocked so this fan provide decent cooling for my build. It is a bit pricy but you won't regret it when you'll (won't) hear it.

Experience: 1 Months

Ive been using this item for a while and i got no problem so far
I have nothing to say this item i like it so much that I might buy another one. Its a good price and good quality

No Really
Experience: 4 Days

Whisper quiet at slowest speed (has an adapter)
Those rubber installation standoffs are nearly impossible to install in tight spaces.
I boxed myself into a corner by installing the fans near the end (so I wouldn't bash them doing something else). I paid, I paid. I had no room in the end to pull-through the rubber installation grommet/standoff thingies. Murder on the fingers, couldn't get needle-nose pliers in the space, etc.
BUT, in the end, on the slowest speed/voltage setting, they are nearly silent. I used a pair of 80mm blowing out, a pair of 92mm blowing in and a giant Noctua C14 cpu fan. Super cool on my i5 2500K / Asus P8P67 motherboard, and super quiet, nearly silent.

Sound-optimised blade geometry and profile:

The NF-R8 is the first fan employing a novel 80mm rotor which was developed by the Austrian Institute for Heat-Transmission and Fan Technology (Österreichisches Institut für Wärmeübertragung und Ventilatorentechnik, ÖIWV). Thanks to the special optimisation of the blade geometry towards ultra low noise application, the NF-R8 is up to 10% more quiet than current high-end fans at the same flow rate.

Self-stabilising oil-pressure bearing (SSO bearing):

The NF-R8 series are equipped with a magnetically centred, self lubricating oil-pressure bearing that provides a new level of quietness and long-term stability.
