Experience: 6 Months

Pretty good linux support
miniSAS ports allow for clean wiring to SAS backplanes
Using this controller with a Norco RPC-4220 20 hotswap bay 4U case. The SFF-8087 ports make wiring really easy since the case has SFF-8087 backplanes. It took a little bit of work to get it working in linux but certainly not difficult. Using the beta mvsas drivers from the SCST project here http://scst.sourceforge.net/target_mvsas.html

Hotswap works, it's fast and cheap, what more can one ask for?

I've got a software raid set in linux spanning across this, the old PCI-X version, and onboard ports. Works great!

Experience: 3 Days

Good quality.
Good product for it's price point.

Experience: 2 Years

Dead simple and cheap, Works with Unraid 4.7, Comes with brackets for both low profile and normal cards, (not pictured). has cool blinky lights
Does not include cables, I understand why, but it means you need to spend at least $30 more
Works as advertised, I am using in an unraid NAS build, I have 2 of these for 16 drive support,

Experience: 3 Months

Plug 'n' play with unraid and ubuntu
Comes with low-profile bracket
Only 8 satas and not 16! lol
Doesn't come with breakout cables
I just bought my second card for unRAID (PMed to $100). Amazed at how simple it was to set up. Plug it in, add drives and reboot, and all drives were seen. Running 8 WD green drives, they're no slower than plugged directly into to the mobo. Have another card working on a ubuntu karmic system - was plug and play there, too.

Experience: 5 Days

A relatively cheap way to add 8 SATA drives
It can hardly be seen as a legitimate con since it's expecting too much, but it doesn't come with any cables.
This is a great card, and it should work in most PCIe16 slots. It's an easy way to add a buttload of hard drives, and if you're using a Norco 4224 case, it really cuts down on the number of cables that one must deal with. Although I don't really intend to use it, the opens to set spin-up groups is a nice feature.

Experience: 10 Days

Very easy to install and setup
Wish it was less expensive
I bought this for my WHS2011 DIY build.

Was going to buy an LSI 9240-8i but didn't want to invest 1400$ on enterprise drives when I already had 8 2tb EARS drives from my WHS V1 machine.

The install of this couldn't have been any easier on WHS 2011. Put the drivers on a USB stick as I don't have a optical drive installed. Pointed the OS at the USB and wam bam thank you ma'am. Done.

Will be able to install a stupid number of drives with both this on the MB SATA ports!

Experience: 2 Months

Inexpensive way to get an additional 8 SATA II ports.
Slow boot up. Additional 8087 forward cables required. (2 per card). Linux mvsas drivers are still buggy beta versions. You cannot recover from S3 standby mode if you install these cards.
Very happy with how well these cards work for my unraid servers. I really wanted to use sleep mode (S3 Standby), but unfortunately, these cards cause your system to lock when you try to wake the machine up. I believe this is a bug in the beta version Linux drivers. Anxiously awaiting a newer release of drivers.

Experience: 90 Days

(1) Low price for 8 SATA-II ports
(2) Uses 2 x SFF-8087 ports and cables, which helps with cable management and increases airflow. Cables sold separately though.
(3) Comes with 32 and 64 bit drivers for Windows, Red Hat, and Suse
(1) Doesn't come with the cables.
You will need to already have or purchase new cables, this card has the mini-SAS connector which requires that you use a fanout cable (mini-SAS to 4 SAS/SATA connectors).

Experience: 1 Years

Controls up to 8 drives
Fits in a PCIe slot
Works well with Windows Home Server
Driver and firmware updates hard to find
This is a great card to use for managing your drives in a Windows Home Server (WHS) system!

I've been using this card for a year in my WHS v1 system and recently purchased another card for my new server build which is currently running WHS v2 Public Preview Refresh (codenamed "Vail"). Since the WHS Drive Extender manages the drives for me, there's no reason to spend extra $$$ on a controller with RAID support.

The card has two SFF-8087 connectors, each of which controls four drives. This is handy if you're using a case with SFF-8087 backplane connectors (like the Norco 4220 and 4224), but if you don't have that type of case then you'll need to buy breakout cables to connect the controller to your drives.

There are BIOS options for making the controller bootable, controlling the staggered spin up of drives, and a few other options. It's not easy to find the latest firmware and drivers on Supermicro's site, but I managed to locate them and update  the firmware in my controllers without any problem.

This card will fit in a PCIe slot (x4 or higher) so you can use it with most modern motherboards. I have mine in an Asus P5Q-E motherboard and have had no problems with it.

Experience: 14 Days

8 Sata ports
Does what it is supposed to
Not supported in FreeNas
Wanted to run in FreeNas but found out it's not supported yet. Now using Windows Server 2008 and everything seems fine.
