Great product overall Verified OwnerVerified Owner

Great product. Fast, Gigabit, easy setup. Great price too.
It's my second Asus router RT-N16. The other (same model) lasts for almost 6 years (still working but not stable). So I bought same model to replace the first one. Easy to export settings and import into the new router (exactly same Wireless and port forwarding settings). I recommend it.

Experience: 2 Years

Built for EasyTomato

Wifi is terrible
Bought this primarily to run as a ad-blocker courtesy of EasyTomato. Works like a charm. Router is coming up to 3rd yer which many say likely to expire due to fried transistor. Happy to buy another unit when that happens.

Experience: 30 Days

many extra features works as claimed
Replacement unit. Original took a bad voltage surge, and lost.
Would recommend it to anyone,

Great stable router for DD-WRT
Absolutely TERRIBLE wi-fi signal.
If you want a wired network, go for this router, but if you need wireless, I'd say be willing to spend a bit more money for something better.

Experience: 2 Years

Can be flashed easily with alternative firmware
Wireless radio less than stellar
This unit is pretty decent spec wise, it has good support for alternate firmware. Haven't had any issues with multiple units thus far.

Experience: 3 Years

Excellent quality and reliable
After about 2 years, stops working -- see summary
One of the most reliable routers I've owned in a long time -- until it stops turning on after about 2 years.
The issue is a capacitor breakdown, specifically the 680uF 16V one. See http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/asus/rt-n16#fixing.bad.capacitors. Replacing that capacitor will fix the issue and you will have your excellent router back.

Experience: 90 Days

Good stock firmware
Guest network available
Older design now
No AC network
Gets a little hot
I bought this due to its reputation for being extremely reliable - I was installing it at my parent's house which is a 3 hour drive away. It turns out they didn't need it so I instead installed it at my home to replace a Trendnet router. I like it a lot. I am using the stock firmware and it does everything I need including putting a time restriction for when the internet is available to my kid.

The only downside is that it gets a bit warm in the cabinet it is installed in and that it isn't "futureproof" because it is not 802.11AC compatible.

I recommend if you are looking for an N router though.

Experience: 9 Months

Lots of features
USB ports can't power external drives. quality control is hit or miss
This router died on me after about 6 months of usage. I ended up having to open the whole thing up and replace and solder on a different capacitor to get it to work again. Apparently this has happened to many others as well. Other than that, once I fixed it, its worked just fine. The stock firmware is full of features that I don't have to flash it with a custom rom or anything. Great buy if you can do some very minor soldering work.

Experience: 3 Years

Tomato/DD-WRT support
Very good specs (500MHZ, 128MB RAM, 32MB Flash)
All Gigabit
Power supply is cheap
So I got this router few years ago (about 3 1/2 years) to install DD-WRT or Tomato on it. I tried both firmwares and decided to stick with Tomato. I never ran on the stock Asus firmware, so I can't comment on it. However, I will not comment on how good the open source firmwares are, but you should give them a go.

The specs of this router are very good. With 128MB of RAM, 500MHZ of CPU and a 32MB Flash, you can have a lot of stuff running on this firmware. Having USB ports is nice, you can use this router as a NAS, download station and even media streamer. The WIFI signal is good/great, although not spectacular. I'm sure there are other better routers, but it does the job for me. It also has all Gigabit ports, which leverage my network to a Gig network. Today, it is a more common, but 3-4 years ago, it wasn't the standard yet.

The only negative point I would give to this router is the power supply. If you want to use USB and use a USB powered drive, use a lot of its CPU ressources, you will need to change the power supply. The bundled power supply does not have many amps, and when you crank the router, it will suffer and reboot on its own. A good power supply is a Sony Playstation Portable power supply. It is the same voltage, same plug but more amps.

Overall, it is a must buy. I haven't done my researches to check if there are better alternatives today, but I won't change it anytime soon. It is still as good as it was when I bought it !

Experience: 45 Days

Gigabit port and N Wireless speed
poor multimedia when use 1 terra HD
If you expect to use just use router service it works great but if you expect like me to share multimedia files like movie and pictures with a hard drive it very unstable and crash most of the time. Many problem on these are reports on the Asus forum.

Comment: As I’ve said through the review, the RT-N16 is a feature packed router and despite having a premium price it is a premium router. Whether you simply want a router that provides a simple stable internet connection or if you would rather dive into the “Advanced Settings” setting up the router is easy.
