Experience: 5 Days

Massive drops in temperatures.
Easy to install.
Almost completely silent at 60%
Thermal tape for RAM heatsinks is beyond bad. Does not stick.
VRM cooling is worse than stock. Use VRM-R3 or VRM-R4 instead.
I finally managed to get these monsters onto my 5870 today. It surprised me how long it took to get the job done.

Thermalright VRM-R3
Installing the VRM-R3 first was the easiest part. I decided to use my Diamond thermal compound instead of the thermal tapes they give you. It was a pretty straight forward install.

AC Accelero Xtreme 5870
Now the challenge. I have to say the thermal pads they give you are still every bit as horrible as everyone said. I tried heating and tried pulling quickly on one but the end result was the same. No glue left on the thermal pad... There was no possible way these were going to stick to the chips. Even heating them up again and pressing them on, they just slide smoothly off (I wish my mouse slid that smoothly).

I spent the next few minutes contemplating whether I should take it back to the store and try to get a fresher version but we already know how that's going to turn out. Then I remembered that I have this double sided film tape that might work, but it turns out even the tape has a hard time sticking to the thermal pad (thats just embarrasing). In the end I just decided to loop it around the edges of the heatsink tightly from all sides which did the trick. I also stuck foam tape on a few strategic locations to use the pressure from the main heatsink. I'd like see them fall off now!

Well finally to the results.

My first test was with the stock heatsink with the fan at 100%. The room temp was 19 degrees during all the tests. The side of the case was left open.

Gpu: 45*_____VDDC: 60*_____VDDCI:65*

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit:
Gpu: 85*_____VDDC: 61*_____VDDCI:75*

Gpu: 92*_____VDDC: 70*_____VDDCI:76*

Cities XL 2011:
Gpu: 90*_____VDDC: 68*_____VDDCI:81*

This makes it pretty obvious that the stock cooler is having a rough time coping with even gaming load. The Kombustor temps are the highest I could reach before the card began throttling itself.

Now for the test with the Accelero Xtreme 5870 + VRM-R3. I did the same test with the new cooler but also added different fan settings to see where the ideal performance lies. I also closed the case this time for more realistic results.

Gpu: 28*_____VDDC: 32*_____VDDCI:36*

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit:
Gpu: 41*_____VDDC: 41*_____VDDCI:62*

Kombustor 100% fan:
Gpu: 44*_____VDDC: 48*_____VDDCI:69*

Kombustor 60% fan:
Gpu: 46*_____VDDC: 48*_____VDDCI:69*

Kombustor 30% fan:
Gpu: 56*_____VDDC: 51*_____VDDCI:78*

Cities XL 2011:
Gpu: 40*_____VDDC: 40*_____VDDCI:59*

Almost leaves me speechless. These numbers are much better than I had expected considering how hot the card ran before. The room temperature was still 19 degrees so the results should be stable.

Also the ideal fan speed seems to be around 60% as anything higher gives diminishing returns. The fans are extremely quiet even at 60%.

In summary, this is probably the best cooling solution for the 5870 at this time. You don't even need to think twice. If you need an aftermarket cooler for the 5870, this is the way to go.

The only other option after this is the spitfire, but with it's huge size and equally rediculous price the Accelero definitely makes the most sense. Also worthy of noting is that the VRM-R4 would be a more suitable solution for most people unless you have a low profile heatsink.

Experience: 2 Weeks

Super cool
Super quiet
Easy enough to install
RAMsink design causes one RAMsink to fall off!
No red/black (reference-style) theme
Can't use reference back plate
I purchased two of these guys for my Crossfire HD5870 setup after one of my card's reference cooler began to make a really loud and annoying sound (yucky!).

Jump to the chase:

This cooler will be unbelievably more cool and quiet than your stock reference cooler. Previously, I was achieving temperatures up to 79 degrees under 100% load. With this cooler, I have not been able to exceed 50 degrees! The fans themselves are more quiet than the reference cooler even at 100%!!!

Hands down, 100% worth the investment.

The only issue so far with this cooler is the design of one of the RAMsinks. Since it has a tapered design (most likely to look cool), it leverages it's own adhesive off of the chips and eventually will just fall off (the poor adhesive doesn't help either). This is no big deal and I have not been able to record any unearthly temperatures that would be critical for the card!

In conclusion. If you have a reference card... BUY THIS COOLER.

Cooling capacity is phenomenal for air!
Looks cool!
RAM sink pads may not stick.
My stock shroud/fan was scraping/rattling and driving me nuts. Instead of RMAing the card, which works perfectly, I bought this. (On sale for $49.99) I'm very pleased with my decision. It's 27C in my room ATM and the card is at 29C idling with the fan at 50%. It stays <50C at all times with stock clock speeds. Up to 60C (Ambient 25-30C.) when I applied a 1000/1300 1.275V OC.

My only issue, and I am not alone, is the VRAM sinks did not stick. I did everything as suggested in the install guide. (Used an eraser to clean the chips.) Most of the glue seemed to have peeled off with the plastic protector. I was able to RMA just the sinks back to NCIX, leaving me the cooler/GPU functionality while I await the new sinks. Very pleased with that!!

I still have to give this a 5 star, even with the RAM sink issue. The cooler does such a bang up job it deserves a 5 star, RAM sinks or not.

Experience: 2 Weeks

Cooling Power
Based off the Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme 5970
Only support Reference ATI 5870 cards
Heat stays in case (not much)
NOTE: Takes up 3 slots, Length of cooler is 320mm/12.6", Reference Card only (Make sure a 5970+a little more can fit in your case.)

I have the XFX 5870 (SKU 48199). Installing was very easy. The case I used is the HAF X (Fan Shroud can not be used, side Fan Duct can be Used)

Stock Temps: Fan Speed 25% (Anything above that I could hear over stock fans) Idle 55c, Load 86c
VDDC Phase #1-#4 Idle 42-44c, Load 73-78c
VDDCi Phase Idle 58c, Load 81c

Accelero Temps: Fan Speed 50% (At 75% I can start hearing the 3x92mm fans) Idle 38c, Load 56c
VDDC Phase #1-#4 Idle 40-43c, Load 70-76c
VDDCi Phase Idle 57c, Load 75c
(GPUZ and MSI Kombustor Stess Testing 3 Min)

Regular Gaming Temps (2 hours)
Stock GPU Load 70c, VDDC #1-#4 54-56c, VDDCi 72c

Accelero GPU Load 44c, VDDC #1-#4 49-52c, VDDCI 60c

Its a nice upgrade to cool the 5870, much more quiet than stock.

Ultimate Cooling Weapon for ATI Radeon HD5870

This premium cooler is specially designed for the ATI Radeon HD5870. Equipped with 5 heatpipes and an optimized heatsink, this 3-fan solution outperforms the stock cooler by 36C. Its excellent acoustic design also manages to lower the noise level to an inaudible level, which is ideal for silent enthusiasts.

Main features

  • Unmatched cooling performace - 250 Watts
  • 3 ultra quiet 92mm PWM fans with low noise impeller
  • 5 heatpipes and 83 fins for efficient heat dissipation
  • Patented fan holder eliminates the buzzing sounds
  • RAM and voltage regulator cooling
  • Pre-applied ARCTIC MX-2
  • CrossFire compatible

Excellent cooling performance
Both models are equipped with three 92mm PWM fans running from 900 to 2,000 RPM, generating 81 CFM airflow for efficient heat dissipation from the core(s).

Whereas the Accelero XTREME 5870 comes with 5 heatpipes and 84 fins, providing 250 watts cooling capacity for the Radeon HD5870. A layer of the ARCTIC MX-2 thermal compound is also pre-applied on the base of these two coolers.

The results are very promising– the GPU temperature of Radeon HD5870 is now 36°C lower than using the stock cooler. This enhances not only the overclocking performance, but also extends the service life of your valuable VGA card.

Whisper quiet
Using three fans does not mean the noise level will be high. The precise fan blade design improves the laminar airflow and helps reducing the noise level to a minimum - only 0.5 sone at full speed (2,000 rpm). The patented fan holder and PWM function helps the Accelero XTREME 5870 to reduce the noise further, creating a much quieter gaming environment.
