Relatively inexpensive, reasonable performance
Not the easiest installation procedure
First of all, some may understandably confuse this cooler with a similarly-named cooler by the same manufacturer: the Cooler Master Gemin II M4. In addition to a minor difference in price, they are very different coolers in many other respects, despite similarities in name and the fact that both are classed as low profile coolers. For one, this cooler, the S524, has five nickle-plated heatpipes that are press-fitted into the plated copper base, while the M4 has only four heatpipes with a direct-contact design. The M4 only stands 59mm tall, including its low profile fan, while this one, the S524, stands 106.4mm tall including the standard depth 120mm fan. So low profile is a relative term. Not surprisingly, the S524 weighs more that twice as much as its cousin. In terms of performance, despite lacking direct contact heatpipes, the S524 is the superior cooler, which isn't altogether unexpected considering it has a far greater cooling surface area and an extra heatpipe compared to the M4, plus the S524 has the cooling fins located directly above the cpu socket extending all the way to the base, while the M4 relies exclusively on the heatpipes to transfer heat away from the socket. Lastly, the fan on S524 spins somewhat faster (at max) and has greater airflow. Frosty Tech has comparison charts for those wanting the numbers.

I bought the S524 to replace the stock cooler with something a little better on my i7 2600K. I did PM it for substantially less than the listed price. I am not a big fan of huge tower heatsinks, but I must confess I may not have been entirely rational in choosing this one over alternatives based upon it being a low profile design. For example, Cooler Masters own Hyper 212 tower models achieve better performance results, weigh less, cost less and stand only 50% taller. In terms of clearance, some folks may have issues with this cooler, depending on orientation. Most of the fins stand 47mm above the socket. I have Corsair Vengeance modules with the tall heatspreaders installed, and there is definitely an issue with these if all four memory slots in my board were to be used. The Vengeance modules are 52.5.mm. Fortunately, for now at least, I'm only using two modules so there is not an issue, as the second slot from the socket provides adequate clearance with the cooler oriented with the heatpipes facing upwards. If I wished to add two sticks more I'd need to go with lower profile modules.

In the box you get two heatsink mounting packages: one marked Intel LGA 2011, and another unmarked. Quite a bit of hardware, all in all, and a little confusing at first. Confusing because the Intel package contains the backplate that is used for both Intel and AMD processors, and the retention bracket for LGA 2011. The unmarked package contains the retention brackets for AMD and all other Intel sockets supported. You certainly want to satisfy yourself that you have all the correct parts for your application set aside prior to proceeding. A socket to fit the retention nuts on the backplate which is used with a philips screwdriver, and a small stamped-steel wrench for tightening the retention bracket on the heatsink for LGA 2011 are included in the packages. A small tube of Cooler Master silvery-grey thermal compound of some sort is also included. The 120mm fan comes already mounted on the heatsink and there are tapped holes in the mounting shroud to accomodate a 140mm fan. However, I fail to see the point of the latter, since much of the additional area of the larger fan would be obstructed by the edges of the shroud anyway. Instructions are fairly straightforward, but mounting is somewhat awkward, since the heatsink must be held in place on the processor on one side of the motherboard while the backplate is attached on the rear. This system does solve the problem of tightening connectors beneath a large heatsink, but there's an obvious tradeoff. Installation or removal with the motherboard installed in the case is possible, but depends on the existence, size and location of an opening in the motherboard tray. In my case I installed the cooler with the motherboard removed, but after installing it in the case I checked to see how removal would work. Unfortunately, two of the four nuts on the backplate just overlapped the edge of the opening on one side, making removal difficult or perhaps impossible. Close, but no cigar. (I suppose I could do some minor case modding to correct the problem, though. Another time perhaps.)

There is another slight problem that arises when it comes time to install the motherboard. The middle mounting hole along the top of the motherboard is obscured by the heatsink. In my example it helped that my case has a removable top panel, which at least allowed me to see what I was doing better. Installing this screw is awkward since, unless you have a very short or angled driver, it involves trying to drive the screw with the driver at an angle. Just a minor annoyance.

There is one more point I'll mention that rather surprised me. The fan comes pre-installed on the heatsink. I was expecting there to be a downdraft configuration as is the case for most low profile coolers, but in this instance the fan was oriented to draw air up from around the socket area. I'm not sure if this was by design or a mistake, but it worked fine like that, so I'll be leaving it for the time being. I may try reversing it later, as this can easily be done without removing the heatsink. Whether it will make any difference remains to be seen.

Anyway, the cooler does the job and I'm certainly happy with it. It immediately knocked six or seven degrees off the stock cooler's temperatures, and with the fan spinning at a fraction of the speed. The fan itself is virtually inaudible at these lower speeds. The cooler tends to outperform similar products like the Scythe Shurikens that are more expensive, at least according to Frosty Tech. But I can also appreciate that this cooler may not be everyone's cup of tea. It can offer reasonable cooling performance in cases where space is at a premium, but its not the smallest low profile cooler out there by any means.

Would I buy another? Meh. But I will keep this one for now.

I'm using this on an i7-2600k with stock voltages and running 1887 ram and not a hair of problems. Cpu temp is perfect and helps to keep the ram cool as well. Looks nice in my case as well which is a bonus and you can't beat the price at all.

Doesn't block the PCI-e slot on the Asus P8H61-i and P8H77-i mini-itx motherboard! It also leaves plenty of room for the RAM, so no problem there either.

Although I couldn't fit its backplate behind the motherboard, so I've just used the nuts and washers.

Be aware that using this heatsink in the Bitfenix prodigy case, you won't be able to fit it unless you remove the case's rear fan (or replace it with a slim one maybe)

This cooler is mounted to an AMD Phenom II 565 unlocked to 4 cores with a Voltage bump from 1.385 to 1.400 l Stock 3.4Ghz Clock Speeds. Even in an NMedia 2000 series case this cooler is ~15 degrees cooler then the stock AMD cooler l idle. I was seeing 52-53 degrees idle with the AMD and now see 34-36 degrees idle with this cooler. I did not have time to do a Load Test.
The Base of the cooler is smooth and near reflective, they have done a good job at lapping it. Instalation is straight forward and very secure.
This cooler could handle a 3.8ghz Clock speed with this cooler even in an HTPC case. Overall $ per results one of the better Horizontal coolers under 4U you can buy.
